Tried to build and price a couple of new Solitudes. Gen prep option on the online build sheets but no generator option. I contacted a very knowledgeable sales rep. He showed me an email sent today from GD saying, effective immediately, on all Solitudes and Momentums, the generator option is being suspended due to inability to source the Onan 5500, 6500 and 7000 generators. This will affect retail orders, too. No time estimate as to when the generators will become available. GD recommends getting the gen prep and then offering an after market install by selling dealer once gens can be sourced again.

True story! Got this email from my Rep this afternoon.

"We have been notified by Cummins ONAN – the vendor that builds our generators – that they are essentially halting generator production due to supply chain issues. This affects our 5500w LP and gasoline generators used on Solitude and Momentum FWs. Apparently Yamaha – who produces the motors used in these generators – are not able to produce motors at this time, and due to some regulatory restrictions they are not able to find an alternate supplier for motors. Cummins ONAN has not specified a timeframe for this shortage, but I will update you as we get more information.

What this means is that starting with the units that are in production today we are not able to put generators in our Solitude and Momentum FWs for the foreseeable future. This unfortunately includes retails as well. We have enough generators on hand for Momentum to supply retails orders scheduled for production in next two weeks, but after that there will not be any left. We don’t have any on hand for Solitude retails (LP gens). We will still be able to Generator Prep units, and if a stock or retail unit was submitted with a generator they will still be Generator Prepped."

The problem is, the generator option from GD is much cheaper than a dealer can install.

They do some prep work, but not much. It is still a 6-8 hour install with the prep in place. I just checked a supplier, and they have the Onan 5500 in stock, but the price went up $1500 from Monday until today.

Steve - appreciate the (not so good news) news flash. What have you heard from the other RV manufacturers you all work with ? Trust not just a GDRV challenge.

Is it the chip shortage issue affecting so many things now days or other parts ?

All manufacturers are in the same boat. All use "just in time" ordering for parts and don't have warehouses full of parts and pieces laying around. It's going to get worse before it gets better.

Build & price sheets online have the 5500 generator option today. At least for the Solitudes. Don't really know how to interpret that.

If anyone is interested, I have a Onan 5500 generator that I took out of a 2020 351M for sale. Located in North Central WA State.

We ordered a 381M on January 25th with the generator. Have not heard anything from our dealer. Any guess if the units on order will have a generator?

As of last Wednesday, the email stated that they had enough generators for 2 weeks of Momentum retail sold builds. Do you have a VIN on your unit yet? If you do, you should be able to find out the status.

This is just great!🤬🤬🤬

Our 5500 is fritzing right now, where it'll run for about 10 seconds, and shut itself down. It's not throwing error codes, either. I'm praying it's just a funky fuel issue.

If it's something major, it's definitely a problem because it's still under warranty.

I wonder what happens to orders made back in Jan when I ordered?

I purchased a Solitude in November and it had the Generator Prep in it. It had the box for the Generator and also in the panel inside it had the Start up Guage and switch to turn on Generator. I never asked the salesman just thought it might have been ordered that way. Now that explains why it did not have the generator. Thank you.

Back in November, there wan't a problem. It would have been ordered with just the gen prep.

Depends when it was scheduled to be built. As off this week, all generators are now gone.

Just received a statement letter from Onan saying they are hoping by mid- Summer to be back to a 2-4 week back log.

This is a bummer. Pretty sure mine hasn't started down the line yet.

Spoke with the dealership where I ordered my trailer from back in early January. He said that the shortage only effect new orders today and not my order from Jan. I just got my VIN number today.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you...I have 9 retail orders that are affected by this.

None of which were new orders.

If you received a VIN, ask for the Grand Design confirmation sheet with the VIN on it that shows all the options.
