Getting ready to replace our Norcold 2118 AC/LP fridge with a residential. Currently, we are running our Norcold exclusively on electricity, the propane has been disconnected and capped off. I'd like to remove the fridge from the enclosure, plug it in and continue to use it while it sits on the kitchen floor while I make the modifications necessary to the enclosure for the slightly taller residential fridge. Does anyone see any reasons why this would be a bad idea?

Should be fine. Keep in mind you will also have to provide 12V for the electronics.

Have you considered keeping the Norcold and replacing the compressors with ones from JC Refrigeration? We were having problems with our 2118 staying cold enough. We put in the JC Refrigeration kit and it has been rock solid ever since (about 2 years now). Didn't have to worry about retro fitting anything. We added 400 more watts of solar this year to account for it since we couldn't use propane when boondocking anymore.

I'm aware of that conversion but we were really hoping to get more storage space and a built in ice maker. The LG we're putting in is 27 cf and has an ice maker in the freezer and cold water dispenser in the refrigerator compartment. We don't want the ice/water in the door

I doubt it will work very well. The enclosure it is in is basically a large fan shroud. It channels air flow where it is needed for proper operation We love our 2118. It is the best fridge we have ever had, even better than our sticks and bricks fridge.
It does appear though that the industry is moving in the residential direction. Since most RVs are only used in campgrounds, and they are cheaper to produce, the future looks bleak for those of us that boondock.
I may have to keep this Momentum a long time.

Did you end up swapping to a residential?

We're lucky, with our floor plan, the fridge is a straight shot in from the entry door. The door opening is 28" with the door swung all the way open. We took the doors off the new fridge and the case is 24" so it easily fit. Getting the Norcold out was more of an issue because there was only about 1/2" to spare on each side and the refrigeration system hanging off the back had a lot of sharp edges

Thanks for the response.
