Notes from a first time RVer on towing capacity, trucks and fifth wheels

Still missing the point the 80/20 rule (not because of F150`s, that statment is out of left field and 100% wrong) is the figure that will more than likely keep you out of trouble. And dosen`t not matter what you apply it to it will work. So walk on the wild side, your money ,your life just say away from me.

I don’t think you need to worry about me Every vehicle on the road around you is running on the edge especially the semi’s

Do you apply this “80/20 thing” to your RV?

I wasn't going to post any more about this 80/20 thing, but I got curious and checked my numbers. My 2018 Dodge Cummins Long Bed Dually pickup has a GVWR of 14,000 lbs., and a payload of over 5,500 lbs. I tow a Momentum 351 M, with a hitch weight of 3,040 lbs. Now according to the 80/20 rule, I'm over weight. My scale numbers show the truck weighs 11,980 lbs. with the trailer hooked up. But, Ruh Row, 80% of my GVWR of 14,000 lbs. is only 11,200 lbs. So I think I'll just continue to ignore the 80/20 rule. Some things just sound good, but simply aren't realistic.

Okay, now I'm done. :)

You all are getting way too anal about this. The 80/20 is not an absolute. It is a nice easy figure that will generally keep a newbie out of trouble.
Think about your first RV when your knowledge base was zero. All the decisions that need to be made, and info to absorb. Then think about trying to explain weights to such a person, whose DW is probably more concerned about the color of the interior, and thinks that is what is the most important thing... Newcomers may listen, but they often will not fully absorb it. Now give them a nice simple ratio such as the 80/20 that they can grasp right away.... And their odds of sucess soar. As they learn, most will make adjustments. You gotta crawl before walking. and walk before running Virtually no one starts RVing fully educated.

Stepping off soapbox now.
