At the rally's and at several campgrounds I have seen folks set up portable dog fencing to keep thier small dogs safe. I tried searching here but got nothing. Also in looking on the web there are numerous brands with various ratings.

For those that have them what actually works and what would you recommend on size and height.

I am getting a new puppy in a few months and looking to keep it safe in the campgrounds.

Thanks for the help

I have the wire folding fences you see on Amazon and chewey for our Aussie. It contained all 3 dogs when we had 3.

What height depends on the dog , our fence is 42 inches and our 43 lb Aussie (big mini) can scale it if she really wants to. She has gone over twice so height is dependent on the dogs ability

Moving this to the pet section

What kind of pup are you getting?

No sweat on not seeing this section

They have held up for 8 years. The wire style like posted above (and we have) come assembled in 8 sections. We connect the assembled sections (we make a big yard in FL) overlapping using zip ties and
posts from Tractor Supply We overlap the connected sections and post at that point and a few in between. For travel we only use 2 or 3 pens if we plan on staying for a week or more. If only for a couple days we don't bother and either leash or cable tie out now that there is only one dog.

Some have very thin doors and some come without doors. We have found that we like the no door better and create our own door by overlapping and using beach clips to hold it closed.

Golden Retriever - field bread for sleekness and agility (think hunting dog). Red in Color. He will not be the typical blond, or English cream most folks are breeding now.

Nice , you're going to have fun with him or her ! so a deeper red, more like a setter red?
Height will all depend on if you plan on using the fence permanently. I'd go with no less than 30 or 36 inches in height and hope it never learns to jump LOL.
We started with a 36" and ended up getting 42 after the first year. Of course the only one who couldn't go over was the little Shih Tzu. but 3 of the 4 Aussies have gone over at least once with the 36". There seems to always be one passing dog that can't be resisted . We also never leave the dogs in the pen unattended just in case they (now she, it's hard to say dog instead of dogs after 18 yrs of more than 1) get over zealous and go over

Close to setter red I hope, but probably a bit lighter. Thanks for the height suggestion. This set up was also recommended https://fxw.life/products/homeplus-dog-playpen-for-indoor-use?variant=42781716840629 I can be used outdoors to and is stakeless so can be used on any surface,

Thoughts?

Those are nice pens but costly for more than 2. If you combine one or 2 I'd be tempted to add a few poles just for stabilization when jumped on by the dog. Most dogs will stand with paws up on the top rail to look over even though they can see through it. More so as it grows than as a pup

Keep in mind that most parks require dogs to be on a leash. We asked about the pen when we had neighbors with one. Park management came and looked, then told us that as long as the people were physically out with the dogs they were okay, but they couldn't leave the dogs alone in the pen. At the State parks where we've hosted they have said that those pens are not permitted.

Then there were the people who set up such a pen for their chickens...at the State park!

Just be aware that more and more campgrounds and state parks are banning pet fences because people are using them to violate the Leash rules...and leaving them unattended too often. People are seeing the dog, coming to the fence to pet them, getting bit, and then suing the campground.. which raises the campground insurance rates and in turn campground fees for you and me.... AND larger dogs are getting out of the fence..

As others have stated some campgrounds have a leash rule. And when they do no fenceing or pen supercedes that leash rule, which is usually a 6' leash rule. Not many people pay attention to these rules because they're rarely enforced... until someone gets hurt then the dog owner not following the rules gets into hot water.

Bill you are very correct.. Rest assured that "George" will be on a leash at all times. I have had bad experience with unleashed dog in campgrounds.

My Emma (GSD) (She passed a month ago) was very well mannered on the leash, but have a stranger or other dog come up to her without asking and she could go ballistic.

She never bit anyone or even tried too, just the fear barking.

In one case she was tied to the step and I was sitting in a chair beside her when some kid came running over to pet here. I had to yell STOP and grab her collar at the same time. Emma sure scared the kid. The Mom started yelling at me for having a vicious dog. I had to explain to her to never allow her kids to run up to a strangers dog without asking permission - particularly on some breeds. Ask first. Its just good etiquette.

In the end I got Emma to settle down and asked her if she wanted to be petted by the little girl. She started wiggling and her happy dance. I had her sit and put her paw out to shake. The little girl cam up and shook her paw. Emma's response was to lick he hand so everything was cool in the end. While doing this I explained to the child on how to approach a strange dog and what signs to look for as she approached.

When passing another owners dog that I think is beautiful. I will sage something and then ask if they are friendly. If I get the OK then I will show the dog the back of my hand, let them sniff and be watching the dogs body language before petting. Other times they might say no and I am cool with that.

I think a big part of dog ownership is obey the rules and educating others - and cleaning up after you fur baby. Nothing irks me more than seeing someone ignore the pile thier dog just made and walking off.

This thread reminds me of the joke I heard, an old one: A guy is sitting on a park bench with a dog beside him. A stranger walked up and asked him if his dog bit. The guy says no, never. So the other guy reaches down to pet the dog, and the dog bites the heck out of him. The guy irately said "I thought you said your dog doesn't bite". The guy says "That ain't my dog". :) An oldie but a goodie.

I bought the FXW fencing off Amazon. Works well. I went with the 40" high and 24" high for along the RV. I bought their velcro with handles and pole bags for storing. Biggest benefit is first potty in the morning and last at night, and the rare in the middle of the night.
