How low will my tank level go before switching to the second tank? I have the Mopeka sensors. One is at 27% and the other started to be used and it is at 94%. Also at what level should I get the tank refilled? It was cold this morning (28) so I had the furnace running and then the tankless water heater. I did not attempt to run both of these at the same time.

Mine switches over at some point when the sensor reads Empty, 0%. That's when I pull the tank and refill it. As to when to refill, that will depend on how you go about it. If you can find a place that will fill, and charge by the gallon, then it doesn't matter when you refill. But if the only places available are places that charge by the tank size, then, obviously, you're better served waiting until the tank is completely empty.

A good tool to have is a portable scale, so you can weigh the tank before, and after, filling. And always ask ahead of time how much propane they're going to put in the tank.

I checked the tank levels again and the 2nd tank is back showing 100%. I will check with the park I am staying at how they charge for propane.

Most of the parks I'm familiar with charge by the gallon. But it still ain't cheap. :)

IME, the Mopeka sensors can be a bit flaky sometimes.

Propane suppliers in the area are a hit and miss on if they charge for the tank or how much you take. I usually try and find a Tractor Supply store in the area as most have propane, usually a good price, and they only charge for what you take.

If I can wait until I get home I have several options for refilling my tanks.

When you rechecked tank levels had the outside temp risen and/or was the sun hitting the tanks?

As it get colder, the tank pressures can decrease. I use a propane tank for pear (cactus) burning which can use large amounts of gas quickly causing the tank to cool and actually ice. As it does this the pressure gets noticeably lower on the torch. If I (carefully) warm the tank with the torch the pressure comes back up.
