Came across someone selling used Battle Born batteries with Victron equipment.

Here is the list of items they are selling as a package:
3x 270Ah 12V LiFePO4 Deep Cycle 8D Battery
1x Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30A (360W) Isolated DC-DC charger
1x Victron Lynx Distributor
1x MultiPlus II 12/3000/120-50 2x120V
1x Cerbo GX
1x Victron GX Touch 50
1x VE.Bus Smart dongle
1x Smartshunt 500A/50mV
Misc fuses, switches and cables

Thoughts on buying used?
How would you assess / test the set up?
thanks!

The first thing I'd want to know is how long they'd been in service. Next is what kind of arrangement is there if one or more of the components doesn't work when you hook it up. Potentially, this sounds like an awesome system if you can manage the risk of buying a used set of equipment.

I normally buy new, buying used always seems to bite me. In this case, if the price is right then I would probably take a shot. Its all top shelf stuff with a good rep.

I have no idea on how to assess or test it though.

I've reached out and being told that it was purchased early 2022 and only used for a few months.
Sold the RV it was in but removed it to sell the system.

Suppose to meet up this weekend to check it out.

The only reason I would consider this is because all of the equipment is top notch, otherwise the risk with used electronics is too great to fool around with it.

I would look up the lowest price I can find on all the various components and make my buying decision based on buying all new components.

My first thought is that I would have to save 50% from what I could buy new. From that point, you need to decide how truthful you think the seller is and if the equipment is in good condition.

PS:, make sure you have a multi meter with you to test the battery voltages. If they were installed in a system together, the voltages should be quite close (unless he has been keeping them charged individually).

depending on the discount the only thing I'd even be concerned with would be the history behind the batteries. If they had a smart BMS you'd be able to dig into the history via a bluetooth app and see the number of cycles and any over/under current warning they've experienced.

Two cents worth...

I think of people who buy high end equipment to be a bit different. An audiophile that buys top end equipment is not going to abuse it, and buying it used is generally a safe bet. Is it possible it was damaged in a lightening strike? Yes. Is it probable if it's being represented as good working order? I generally answer no.

This seems like a great setup. Of course, I'd want to talk to the owner, understand who installed and configured, and get a sense of service life. I'd also ask about adverse events, e.g. lightening. If I was satisfied with the responses and the price was right, I'd buy with a high degree of confidence.

As mentioned in earlier post, the batteries may be the biggest concern, but it seems unlikely they could be seriously abused in 12 months time.

Let us know how it goes.

Sounds like a real good opportunity to save a big $ with a little investigation.
If in the end you decide to walk away, I'm sure other members on here would be interested. Maybe point that person to here.
I might jump on it. :)

Battle Born batteries have a top notch BMS. It is pretty hard to screw them up.

A lightening strike would do it,,, But that will screw up just about anything:pound:

Only problem with Battleborn is you can’t access their BMS info so you don’t know how many cycles are on those batteries. Battleborn warranty is not transferable as well. If they are cheap enough go for it, they have a good reputation.

Victron stuff is built like tanks, so I’ve never had a fear buying used. Lots of service dealers as well and the product is very modular so if one part breaks you don’t have to replace an all-in-one. If a multiplus fails that is expensive but again very modular inside, I’d get it repaired first.

People often overlook that your can get 10 year warranties from Victron as well:

For a 10% surcharge on the net price for products that came with a 5-year warranty, an additional 5 years of warranty can be purchased, bringing the total warranty to 10 years. Warranty extensions need to be applied for ultimately one year before expiration of the original term.

I did not find a non-transferrable clause but I didn’t dig too deep yet.

Thanks for all the input everyone.

I went and checked out the deal.
Checked the voltage on all 3 batteries and they came up 13.3v on all of them.
The package included cables, etc. So, asked if they had the time for me to hook everything up.
And did just that in the middle of a parking lot.

Had a slight issue with the MultiPlus II, couldn't get any lights on the front panel when turned on.
After a quick google search, had to disconnect the ethernet cables from it, then turn it on and plug the cables back in.
Think it'll be ok.
Messed with the Touch 50 for a bit then packed it up and took it home.

I priced just the components, minus the cables and other extras, and figured I got about 1/3 off retail.

No warranty with used, but I'm ok with that. I think.

That was a good find at a great price. Congrats and enjoy.

Glad it is working for you so far. Please keep us updated on your experience down the road.

I agree sounds like good equipment. I have installed our Victron Solar System and am very happy with the results. The only caution I would have/recommend is the learning curve of setting up this system. There are some great YouTube videos on this subject. The items listed are top of the line, however trouble shooting if there is a problem can be very time consuming and also expensive, should the Multiplus be faulty. Not sure how you would test this equipment until you have it installed. If the price is 50% of what it would cost new, then I would take the risk, if it was any higher, I would go new.
Good Luck and enjoy getting your solar up and running!
