I Have run into a situation that I believe would be of interest to Grand Design owners. I have a recall on my 2016 Reflection and am having a problem getting it serviced. Part of the problem might be caused by us but owners should be aware of the problem.
My recall is : my 110 Volt wire connector (s) in the underbelly may not be properly secured and may drop to the bottom of the underbelly over time. if water intrusion into the underbelly were to occur and the connection (s) were to contact this water the potential exist for an electrical short circuit, increasing the risk of fire.
My problem is this, We did not buy our rv from our local dealer. The reason:we went through the normal purchase routine and on our final meeting ,ready to buy our purchase price increased $5,000. Now, after this we did not feel comfortable going through with the deal. At this dealer. We did want to purchase a Grand Design product but at that time the only Grand Design dealer was 114 miles from home. We have owned several 7 trailers over the years, mostly Jayco and have never had and reason to return to a dealer for anything. So we felt safe in making our purchase at a dealer 114 miles from home. Now we are in a situation where we have to return to the dealer we purchased our Grand Design. The message here is, if you do not get a decent deal at your local dealer you are stuck with the deal or you travel 114 miles from home to own a Grand Design.
NOW. THE OTHER PART OF THE RECALL LETTER ! States : Contact your selling dealer OR NEAREST Grand Design RV dealer as soon as possible to schedule an appointment. If your distance from a Grand Design dealer is significant, please contact us at ---,---.---- so we can work with you to make other arrangements to have the needed inspection & repairs completed.
So at this point I have contacted Camping World and they told me they can not do recall work and they have already turned away 6 other Grand Design trailers wanting to have the same recall completed.
Just something to think about. I called Grand Design and so far this is where I am. The dealer that refuses to do my recall is a Maryland dealer. For your information.

Think about this I have a GRAND DESIGN with a potential serious recall ( POTENTIAL FOR FIRE ) and a local GRAND DESIGN DEALER REFUSES TO CORRECT MY RECALL . GRAND DESIGN TOLD ME THEY HAVE NO CONTROL OVER THE DEALERS.

I believe the NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION should be aware of this. I believe ( especially for a safety recall ) a any dealer that sells a particular brand should have to service recalls. Sorry this is so long but felt you need all the facts and this is something to be aware of.

You can take it to ANY GD dealer for recall work. If the dealer closest to you doesn't want to, call GD and tell them that. If 114 miles is too far for you GD will work with you to authorize another service facility for the work EXCEPT CAMPING WORLD. They NEVER OK Camping World for any of their work.

Honestly, with the experience I've had at my local dealer, I'll do it myself. They didn't jack up the price when we purchased our reflection. The buying experience was amazing. But every trip to the service department has been one crap show after the next. They even broke our bunk slide facia on the rear bathroom door and tried to cover it with black silicone. I'm hoping someone will get ahold of the work instructions for the recall and post them so I can take care of it myself. I'll take my chances with the electrical issue until I get it fixed.

You should be glad GD doesn't authorize any work done at camping world, they are well kown to have less than stellar service departments.
GD has never had and will never have a working relationship with Camping World , don't know the whole story why but sure there are many good reasons.

Be aware, if you do your own work, it may be an issue if you ever file a claim related to any electrical issue on your rig.

I appreciate the heads up. However, my warranty is up. I've already changed a bunch of stuff myself. Added lots of solar, wired in a multiplus, added batteries, monitor, display, etc. So I doubt they would have warrantied much more then the recall anyway.

I would never let Camping World even look at my unit, much less touch it. Never, Never, Never. Too many horror stories out there.

It's not a warranty thing. It's a safety recall. Could affect any insurance coverage you might have.

I don't think my insurance is that "advanced". I've never had them say anything about open recalls but who knows. Cross that bridge if I come to it I guess.

i have been to 2 dealers near me for service and they both suck. It’s all about selling units and selling extended warranty plans but when it comes to getting something covered under warranty, recall or getting something worked on in a timely manner, good luck

This is the big problem with buying from a dealer not close. You become your own warranty/service repair. I've done it on my last two trailers, and accepted the fact I either drive a long way to get selling dealer service, do it myself, or pay out of my pocket to get it fixed. So far, I'm OK.

It's amazing you can take a vehicle into any of their dealers and get great service. Not so with trailers. Another sign of the deterioration of the RV industry.

If this truly is an issue that could cause potential loss of life, then it could eventually result in litigation. I think if it were me, I'd let GD know just how much responsibility they are assuming by not working with you. If that doesn't work, I'd fix it myself and not give it another thought.

Honestly I am the best mechanic I know. I'm ok with that. I put extra effort into everything on my trailer. Haha. Seriously though, I am a diesel mechanic and I don't mind "doing it right" on my own stuff.

GD has never had and will never have a working relationship with Camping World , don't know the whole story why but sure there are many good reasons.

My selling dealer has a good service dept, but when I requested a specific hard-wired ems/ surge protector installed prior to delivery, they reported that their guys had never really done one before and it didn’t get done before delivery. I took a credit on the sale price and settled for having it done elsewhere. (I had installed this unit on my previous trailer myself, and everything was fine, but manufacturer won’t warranty self-installs. On a brand new trailer, I want to have coverage if there were a problem, so needed to document that I had a professional install.)

At the end of my maiden voyage / vacation, I contacted the parts department at Camping World in the same city. Ordered my ems, price matched a sale price I had found and scheduled an install that worked with my return home. (We are full-timers.) My trailer was in and out in 3 hours and the tech did a great job with the install. Everything works perfectly. And he installed it where I wanted it installed, not where it was easiest for him.

I’ve seen a lot of bad stories about Camping World, but my personal experience with this store was excellent. They new the equipment and how to install it properly, everyone was professional and thorough in communication and provided sound service on my schedule. I’ll go back if I need something I can’t or don’t want do myself.

Thanks for the heads up about Camp World. Really appreciate the info. We were about to take our 2018 303RLS over there. We are in same boat, only Dealers around are several hours away. But hey, that's called RV'ing right?

I received the same recall ... I called Youngblood RV and Powersports in Ozark, MO. First, they said it would cost $ 150.00 (their minimum diagnostic fee) and it would take 3 days. I told them, no, it was a safety recall and GD would pay all the costs and that it should take an hour to do. She said she would check with her manager and call me back. She called me back and said there would be no charge, but I would have to drop it off for 5-7 days. I told her no thank you, the repair should take an hour, I said I realized they were busy and that I would be glad to make an appointment one, two or three weeks out but I should not even have to drop it off. I called GD to let them know to instruct Youngblood RV as to the proper procedure. GD said that any certified tech - including mobile tech - could do the repair (except for Camping World). Also I told GD I got the Canadian Recall letter instead of US, and they sent me a correct copy. SO I will be scheduling a mobile tech to do this.

I'm sure many are curious which Camping World had good service, care to share on the location?

This service was performed at Camping World in Lubbock, Texas. Cole in Parts was super easy to work with over the phone. Nita and her crew in Service were awesome. I don’t know the name of the Technician, but he knows what he’s doing and was very efficient and left a clean space instead of dropping his wire cuttings, etc. Good experience and I’ll go back to them .

I experience the same problem with a local GD dealer. They have 2 location. I called the closest and they flat refused to fix the recall because I did not buy from them. I call their other location, about 25 miles away. This time they did not refuse to fix it they just scheduled it out to late September. I called the dealer I purchased from (108 miles away). They gave me an appointment 7 days out from when I called. Made the trip, took all of 15 minutes for them to fix the issue. Altogether I spent about half the day getting it done right.
Regards, Jim
