Had the fireplace front cover (glass) fall off and shatter while driving down the road. This cover is “locked” into place, and needs to be physically lifted off so this does not happen. Has anyone had this happen? I was going to call Grand Design and tell them that they should send me a new one at no cost. It is at a dealer right now being looked at. To make matters worse one of the pieces of broken glass, that we missed got under one of the slide outs and ripped the flooring!

I am sorry this happened. I wouldn't be too happy! Was your secured with two screws? Mine is. I had this same fire place in my previous Cougar and traveled with it for a couple of years with no issues.
Maybe they didn't secure it with the screws at the factory?

it’s the slotted type, there two screw heads on each side, it slides down a groove and locks into place at the screw heads

Yes, it was secured with two screws, come to find out later that in fact it was from excessive exterior heat (100 degree weather) on the fireplace that cause the glass to explode. The dealer had told me that they were working on another Grand Design and came in the next morning and found the glass from fireplace all over the floor. Regardless this should not be happening and I think it should be a warranty issue with Grand Design ?

Question for you....have you or you significant other ever cleaned the fireplace glass? If so and you used a spray cleaner some of it could have ran down the back side of the glass and reacted with the coating that's on the glass. I had the same thing happen to our glass oven door at home... It simply exploded out all over the kitchen floor one day into a thousand little squares of glass, the over hadn't even been used in a few weeks! Turns out it was a chemical reaction between the glass coating and the window cleaner. Some pieces of glass on the floor were still an inch or two square in size but continued to pop apart into little quarter inch pieces right on the kitchen floor!

we have never had to clean the glass and if I did, I would use a wet rag and that’s it. I contacted Grand Design because I think they should know that this is going on with the fireplace.

The thing that I don’t understand is why wouldn’t it also happen when I run the fireplace (heat)?

We have cleaned our fp, furrion oven and stove top glass in our 295RL, and our convection ovens and LP fp (both sides) in our stick built with Invisable Glass spray cleaner without ever any issues for over 4 years in our RV, and even longer in our stick built .

It really has nothing to do with getting cleaner on the front of these items. It's the coating on the back side of a glass panel oven that you normally wouldn't clean. I'm sure the fireplace also has this heat protective coating on the back of the glass. Never happened to ours again either.

You all know this 'fireplace' is just a 'video' right? You understand, there are no actual flame, right? If there are no flames, why would they put on a protective film to handle the 'virtual' heat?

The fireplace is a 'video' and the heat is from an electric heater that have a vent above the video.

Would I expect GD to pay for your problem. No. It's your problem and you should handle it. If there is a defect and that defect caused the problem, that might be different. But if it came off and broke, it's your problem. Owning an RV is full of these experiences.

As for the glass particles, I don't really believe people understand how difficult it is to clean up all the debris from safety glass unless you have done it before. Side/back windows in cars are safety glass and I've spent 2+ hours cleaning all the glass debris stuck in the carpet and inside doors.

Cleaning a floor would be fairly easy. The slide would have to be out partially so you can get your long blow gun and blow out [shop air] the debris under the room. Get on your hands and knees to look. A Swifter might be something that will fit. You might have to rig up something with strings since the handle may not fit.

Small scratches might be able to be fixed by people who do that type of work.
