Just finished up a 1800 mile shakedown cruise in our new 270bn. Everything went really well except for the Turning Point hitch. I'll save that for another thread. I did notice the gauges for the grey water and black water are not even close. One flush of the toilet and it says its a third full. So today, I took the flow meter and filled each tank to see what the readings/reality was. I recorded each stage. Once the 4 lights came on and it said full, I continued to fill the tank until it was maxed out. I was a little more conservative with the toilet not wanting to overfill it onto the floor.

Here are my results. I know this is unique to my 5th wheel your's will likely be different. It is amusing that once the full light comes on how much more it can hold before you overflow.

I got that feeling. One flush of the toilet and the black reads one third. My math says 13 gallons is one third capacity. At least now I know what the relationship is between the gauge and the tank. Now the key is not to get greedy and overflow the black water tank

IMHO, it's a waste (no pun intended) of time trying to figure out the OEM waste tank gauges. They are about as useful as a screen door on a submarine after a few uses. You'll soon learn your use patterns and how long they will go.

For the grey tanks, a good indication of when they're full is the sink or the shower backs up. While I've never gotten it that full, I've heard that the toilet gurgles a bit when the black tank is full.

I was more looking for a general reference point when the tank gauge says full how much do I really have before I overflow. I’m brand new to this RV and having some base reference I felt was useful. It’s sad that the gauges are so inaccurate. Seems to me it wouldn’t be that difficult to build a system that would give you more accurate reading.

I don't think anyone can really give you that general reference point. If the OEM sensors are clean, they can be within 1/3 of a tank for accuracy. If they're dirty, all bets are off. You can search the forum for the "geo method" of cleaning black tank sensors which helps.

There is a good aftermarket system if you want accurate tank monitoring. It's called SeeLevel:

SeeLevel system

It's not free and you have to drop the underbelly to install it... but it's accurate and reliable.

Thank you for the information. I’m not ready to replace the sensors quite yet, but it’s good to know there’s at least a system that’s accurate. I’ll keep that in my hip pocket in case I get thoroughly frustrated with the current factory system. Thank you again.
