Remove all roof sealant or notch out what is needed for bracket?

Hello all,

I have a 2024 Reflection 337RLS with a Ventline fan in the bath. This model includes handy brackets built into the exterior plastic frame of the unit to add a vent cover without drilling into the fan frame. This is all great, however when Grand Design sealed around the fan on the roof they were very generous with the sealant. So generous that the cover brackets will not line up with the holes on the built in bracket mounting.

So, do I just try to shave off a bit of the sealant in the bracket locations or should I just start scraping it and get much more off than is needed? I suspect an 1/8" is all that is needed. If I shave off some do I need to reseal it or is it ok as long as I'm not down to the roof? Any concerns about bedding the bracket into the new sealant or should I let it dry first? Opinions?

What Marcy has said, only remove what you need. 1/8th inch there won't get you down to where a leak would start. If you want to be safe, add a few touches of lap sealant once the new vent cover is in place.

For me, I would remove all of it. I totally understand that nobody will ever get on your roof and say there is a 'patch' job.

I guess we all agree, it's not what you remove, it how you reapply.
