Hi All -

Our trip to Golden, CO from Phoenix, AZ via Santa Fe, NM and back through Durango, CO in October was wonderful. For all of you that helped me plan said trip, thank you. My 2024 RAM Limited Crew Cab 4X4 with factory rear air-suspension and 6.7 Cummins averaged 10.5 MPG across 1800 miles towing my nearly 8,000 lbs. 2023 GDRV Imagine 2600RB.

Apart from some nearby trips in AZ and NV in the next couple months, my GF and I want to visit Austin, TX. I know now, 325 +/- 25 miles per day is about right for us when towing. That said, I am thinking of the following route:

Day 1. Phoenix, AZ to Deming, NM (333 miles)
Day 2. Deming, NM to Fort Stockton, TX (343 miles)
Day 3. Fort Stockton, TX to Austin, TX (344 miles)
Days 4-7. in Austin, TX
Day 7. Austin, TX to Fort Stockton, TX (344 miles)
Day 8. Fort Stockton, TX to Deming, NM (343 miles)
Day 9. Deming, NM to Phoenix, AZ (333 miles)

Any insight on better route would be appreciated.

Best, Joe

Unless you have business or relatives in Austin, I would stay in Fredericksburg or Kerrville and take a day trip to Austin or San Antonio. There are very few RV resorts in the Austin area. The newest and probably closest to Austin is Buda RV Resort just off Robert Light and IH35. Be aware it seems to have multiple full timers. Your route seems to be okay.

Thank you. I appreciate the insight about the RV Parks / Resorts in the Austin area. Happy Thanksgiving.

That's what I would do as well. Fredericksburg or even Johnson City are right in the Texas Hill Country. Several nice campgrounds in those areas, as well as Kerrville. That way you could take day trips to Austin or San Antonio.
You'll be coming across and through Las Cruces NM, we loved that area when we were out west.

From Fort Stockton, I would suppose you plan on coming down I10 and taking Highway 290 into Austin, not a bad road at all.

Not trying to be a worry wort, but stay alert east of Fredericksburg on 290. There's several wineries there, and the auto mishaps are common. Not suggesting another route, just stay alert.

If you like to tour distilleries, there's one just before you get to Johnson City on 290. It's small and we toured it years ago. They gave a great explanation of the difference between bourbon and whisky.

Your route sounds fine; we have traveled that way to San Antonio and back to Tucson several times. In Deming I recommend Low-Hi Ranch RV park; it's south of town about 4 miles so very quiet, but access is easy, the people are nice, and it's Passport America so only $23 or so per night. And Ft Stockton RV park on the east side of town is nice as well.

A thousand miles in 3 days is certainly doable but not fun. We would choose to put some breaks between those days to enjoy life. Balmorhea State Park, with a huge pool, is close to I10 between Van Horn and Ft Stockton.
Sun Outdoors Lake Travis, half a mile from our house, is as close to Austin as you will find if looking for a highly rated campground. They have all the usual amenities and relatively large grassy sites.
Be aware:
- Lake Travis is beautiful still, but way low for more than a year, so many boat ramps are closed.
- Austin traffic rivals Houston and Dallas for being heavy, slow, and unpredictable.

Sounds like your travel days are about the same length as ours. 300 to 350 is a good day. Not too long in the saddle and also still gets some mileage behind you. Seems like the campgrounds want to be 275 miles apart or 400 miles apart. Looks like a good plan and a lot to do in the Austin, San Antone area. Enjoy the trip.

We live in San Antonio and both me and my wife have relatives and friends in El Paso and Phoenix/Scotsdale. We travel there often. I would stop in Ft. Stockton and stay at Ft. Stockton Resort and RV Park. It’s about $37 per night with FHU. It’s easy to get to just down from Love’s TS. Then I would go to Las Cruces and stay at Hacienda RV Park (there aren’t any decent RV parks in El Paso). Very nice and also easy on and off of I-10 and just down the street from Old Mesilla. Great tourist spot. Be sure to eat at La Posta Mexican Restaurant. Very good food and been there for over 75 years. In Phoenix we like to stay at Cotton Lane RV Resort. It’s on the far west side of Phoenix just of I-10 and 303. A little out of the way but nice and quiet with great amenities and with the great freeway system in
Phoenix it’s fairly easy to get anywhere in the city.

X2 on La Posta restaurant in Las Cruces - Great! A long time ago I read it was an old Stagecoach stop over. Sure kind of looks like it - but great food!
