Rust concerns.

Hello Everyone, I'm new here...my moniker is Rena16. After a lot of research my husband and I recently purchased our dream trailer, a Momentum 328! It was delivered last Friday, unfortunately there is a lot of rust on the undercarriage and on other components. I'm wondering if anyone here has had a similar issue, we are hoping Grand Design will help us with the rust as it is a new coach and we are the first owners. I'll attach a few photo's so you can better understand our concerns. DSC_0441 (1280x848) (1024x588).jpg DSC_0442 (848x1280) (678x1024).jpg DSC_0447 (1280x848) (1024x546).jpg

I look forward to hearing from you and I'm excited to share our future adventures once this is behind us! :)

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your new camper!

Has this been discussed with the selling dealer and pictures forwarded to them? Not sure of your location, but looked like the unit was delivered to the dealer during the winter and not cleaned when received. Some rust is always present though your example is too excessive.

Just out of curiosity, did you special order the trailer or was it a trailer in stock. In either case why did you accept the trailer if you had concerns about the rust?

Ditto - I'd not have accepted it in that condition. The dealer should have cleaned and repainted this, but since you accepted it you may have a battle on your hands. I've had zero rust issues in our first year of ownership, but I do check monthly.

Just guessing, but if the trailer is a 2015, it was most likely delivered to the dealer or a dealer in 2014. The dealer or dealers most likely took the fifth-wheel to a RV show in the winter time where they use salt as deicer. Then did not wash it off when they returned to the lot. Then they sold it to you and make you a great deal because they were getting the 2016s in and this was their last one (not counting the others in their storage lot). You may have a battle on your hands with the dealership. If they do not stand behind their customer service and do nothing. I would go to your local welding supply shop and see what product they recommend to use for stop rust. Follow their direction and steps to stop it and then repaint it. Good luck! and I am sure once you get past the bad taste of the dealer. you are going to really enjoy your 328 as I do!

Yeah, that's a lot of surface rust for a 2016. A PDI would of caught that. You'll want to get that taken care of sooner than later as rusting will continue.

I recently saw a 2015 380m in Oklahoma City that was rusty like that. It too was being sold as a new model.... with hail damage as well.

Hi Dave, thanks for looking in on my post. I have forwarded a host of photo's to dealership and we are currently in discussion with them. We are in California and purchased the coach from the Midwest region.

Hello RGMutchler, we could not find a 328 for sale in our area (only the larger rigs were available) we found this on in the Midwest area (we are in California.) I agree had we visually seen the rust we would not have purchased it, sadly it was not disclosed.

I dont know about ya, but i didn't lay on the ground and look under mine when i picked it up. I would think it would be fixed with this great customer service we have. Don

Thank you arhayes for your response, it is good to know that to date you have had no rust concerns.

Redram,
I did crawl around mine before I spent that kind of money. I also refused to buy one that I had seen them moving around the lot with the slide open and another one that the slide had hung on, probably from them moving it around without closing the slide. I also refused to purchase one that had been to all the shows. I ended up special ordering to at least attempt to mitigate some of these issues.

Rena16,
The question in my post was probably a bit more direct that most would like. If you interpreted it in a bad way it was not my intention to be offensive. If you ordered it from another dealer and the issue was not disclosed is it too late to point out the non disclosed condition? I also know that some states have what is essentially a back out law for some period of time after the purchase of a vehicle. In some states it only applies to motor vehicles but it might be worth a call to your state consumer protection agency. I don't know what time frames you are working with but it might be a good idea to start that research/process while working with the dealer; dealers are usually aware of these laws and I have seen them slow play consumers to allow the time frame to run out.

I think I saw the same unit in OKC. It was a 380 TH. Almost bought it but couldn't get the deal we wanted. I made mention of all the road salt STILL on the unit
which was at a show last winter. I am taking delivery of a 380TH in Tulsa next Wednesday and will surely look at the underside in more detail before I sign the contract. I did note the chassis was much cleaner than the one in OKC. The coach in OKC looked 10 years old because of the nasty undercarriage. This isn't the first time I've seen this though. I wouldn't buy a "new" car or truck if it was this way either. I do hope the OP gets this resolved to their satisfaction.

Hi RGMutchler, No problem I totally understood your view as we were surprised to discover the rust. I had not thought of state to state protection laws, thank you for that I will look into it! I appreciate your interest, we do love the rig just not the rust!

Thank you woodzrider and congratulations on your new coach!

Do you mind stating which dealer in Oklahoma City had the obesity rust? The dealer I looked at the 385 at yesterday has one in Oklahoma City also and they are going to see how it looks and send me photos. PM works fine if you prefer.

Hi C130TN, we did not purchase ours form Oklahoma City (there was a mention of OKC in this thread though.) I'm happy to say the dealership is working with us to resolve this issue. I would definitely request pictures of the undercarriage just for reassurance that there are no surprises.

Great, glad they are taking care of the issue. I had concerns but called Grand Designs and they were able to answer my questions. I was able to find a 2015 385TH with all the options I wanted and at the price I wanted. I had photos sent of the frame and it looks great, hope to go pick it up in a week or two. Trying to work out my schedule, kinda a long drive. Can't wait to go get it though, then trying to figure out when I can actually take it out camping.

Would love to see a photo of your new 385 when it arrives, congratulations!
