Rust prevention on rotors over winter?

Wow, look terrible on every side but the one facing the sun exposure. I'm assuming they will smooth off with some braking action. Do covers help with the rust? I wouldn't think so. But parked the car outside for one week and all four pads were frozen to rotors and POW when they broke free. These look as bad as VW/Audi rotors (which come with a thin blue coating to prevent rust) which rust if you look at them cross-eyed. I know some folks paint them - I just can't bring myself to do that.

Wouldnt sweat it..... They will clean on first usage if brakes are working properly?

Use the trailer once a year and the rust does not have enough time to do any damage. {pitting} First application of the brakes and the rust is gone.

I would think paint would prevent the pads from making proper contact. Would also wear off after a few brake applications so pretty much a waste of time.

Yeah, I would think painting the rotors is a very bad idea. Rust is just something to have to put up with when the rotors are cast iron/steel, which is very common. Not a problem with rotors that are rotated and used frequently, but perhaps could lead to pitting if not used often enough to scrape the rust off.

I honestly can't think of anything to do about it that won't degrade the braking ability of the disc.

Well 650 miles into trip to Elkhart and they are shiny but you can still see the pits where the rust was deeper. Not sure how I can prevent that. Wear and tear will probably take care of that in the long run. No problems braking though.

Yeah.... the "surface" should wear off. Any deeper pitting may not clean as well. Small pitting wont effect the performance of the braking system.

If available and not already on, could eventually replace pads with caramic material. They tend to wear (pad and rotor) more evenly with less noise and dust as well. I change out all my disc pads with ceramic shortly after buying a new vehicle.

Brakes are clean and I made it to Middlebury GD site but trip from H E double L. Found more flex issues. More broken stuff (rear of island coming off, Microwave door chafed all the paint inside off and that was in the microwave, weird screw under the slide overlap which gouged the linoleum when going out at Middlebury. First two days were rain, rain, and more rain. First night parked in mud at a farm -TV and RV were covered in mud. Today going around Cleveland was forced to run over a dead carcass of some kind with trucks on either side of me. Front of rig was covered in blood and guts, plus mud from two nights earlier when I pulled into the first Ohio Tpke rest area - then started searching for a Blue Beacon between Cleveland and Elkhart. Found one south of Toledo thankfully.

I didn't really buy into a Covid build, but I do now. Everything is falling off or apart.

And for those with future factory appointments, don't show up at the Middlebury GD sites on weekends - the place is shut down and I can't dump my tanks (they only have electric - no water). There is a dump station but the gates are locked all weekend. And, have to check in at Elkhart at 6am Monday and try to dump tanks before that and empty the trailer (which I can't do until I disconnect). Have no idea how this is going to work.

There used to be a saying (Get that great GM feeling) Think you are getting that great GD feeling. LOL

I just found a campsite nearby the factory and prepped the day before my appt. ie, emptied the rig, got my clothes/food ready to remove for my appt.

After you get your rig checked in and you have some free time try to find a Rise N Roll Amish bakery. Food is fantastic.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Holy cow! it really is the trip from He?? Glad you made it in one piece even if the trailer didn't . Hope you found a spot to park for the night. Can you get a short term storage rental to keep your things safe? or it may be cheaper to get a small uhaul and just lug it around with you. Once GD gets the coach it sounds like it could be a total rebuild and take some time.
Rise and Roll is pretty good but if you haven't lost your whole appetite try the Essenhouse (likely closed on Sunday like most things there.

I traveled light - just a suitcase and almost no food and thought it best if DW and the puppy stayed home because of the uncertainty of timing. I will leave some things in the RV pass thru in their bins - stuff I needed to travel with (plumbing, waste, electrical). If they want me to completely empty it, that will all fit in the truck bed once I unhitch. I'm debating about leaving the coffee maker and toaster in the rig plus I have a few boxes in the back overhead which I suspect won't be in their way. I'll pull the bedding off and stuff that in the back seat of the TV. There's more coordination required due to the 6am Monday drop off than I really thought about.

Sorry you are going through all of this.
I've been out to the factory for repairs twice, once when the repair center was at the same location as the campground and the 2nd time when I had to drive 20 minutes to the new location. I stopped for the night at the last Ohio turnpike rest stop ($20 for electric) and dumped and flushed my tanks on the way out ... all of the ones with overnight RV spots have dump stations. Also there is water at the GD factory campground sites located at the bottom of the power pedestal (picture below). I didn't take much out of my RV except for the pass through storage compartment because they were replacing the doors. Tell them absolutely NOT to do their "courtesy" pressure test of your water system to check for leaks! They did one on mine and messed up my nautilus valves, most likely by turning them with too high of a pressure on them. It also cracked the vacuum check valve on the back of my toilet.

I suspect you are totally overwhelmed with the repair scenario but if you have the mental bandwidth might consider any other repairs/upgrades you want them to do on the rig. Now is the time.

FYI, when I had frame work done on my SOB 5er (cap off, siding off, welding work, etc) it took the shop a solid week. Of course, the scope of your work is much broader then mine.

Thank you - don't know how I missed the water. I have plenty of fresh water in tank for a shower tonight. I'm overnighting at GD Middlebury's spot but appointment is in Elkhart tomorrow. Biggest issue is dumping before I get there - nothing open that early. There's a KOA just down the road where I can dump but not sure I can hold it all night. I might just take a site down there so I don't have to sweat it. No pressure test but I don't know how long they will have it (frame flex, suspension, electrical, hydraulic all on the table).

Elkhart Campground ($50ish/night) or Shipshewana North or South Campground ($35ish/night) may be good spots for you tonight depending on where your appointment is in the morning. Remember to watch for the horse/buggies in the morning at that hour!

Might be too big of an ask but if they find suspension problems again, I want IS installed especially since GD is now offering it as an option. I don't want 5K in repairs every year. This design is too light in the rear and too heavy in the front for the 8K axles and I consider it a flawed design with the 8Ks. Primary reason I ordered them was because Morryde said to in anticipation of GD sending it to them for IS install and re-use of disc brakes. But due to Covid, couldn't get the rig from GD to Morryde before delivery. The ride is so stiff, a lot of stuff in the main area is falling apart. Even had one of the heavy iron stove top grates jump off and land on the other one - found them stacked when we arrived.

Got the word today that it is all done - one to two weeks before they anticipated completion. Should be able to pick it up next week. Have no clue what he did/didn't do so don't know what to expect. Haven't had to sign anything yet. There were a lot of things the dealer messed up (and things which broke on the way to Elkhart) that I hope they fixed. Suspect those were my extras.
