A member asked whether 3-IN-ONE RV care Rubber Seal Conditioner is suitable for the flush valve seal on an RV toilet to help avoid replacing the seal soon. Members generally leaned toward silicone-based plumber’s grease instead, saying it is made for valve and seal lubrication, is water-resistant, and should last longer than a spray-on conditioner that is more of a surface treatment.

  • Some members reported using Vaseline successfully for years, but others cautioned that petroleum-based...

Thoughts on using 3-IN-ONE® RV care Rubber Seal Conditioner on the seal of the flush valve. Really don't want to have to replace that seal in the near future.

Not saying it won’t work, but there is plumbers grease make specifically for this type application. It’s thick and meant to lube valves. The spray is meant as a coating to be wiped and allowed to dry. It’s not a lubricant in the way the grease is designed to provide.

When it seems the rubber seal is not holding water, I just rub some Vaseline on the rubber seal.
it may not be as good as Plumber's grease, but it has worked for me for years.
Be aware, Vaseline is not recommended on this seal because V is petroleum based and can degrade the seal material.

Totaly agree. A tube of quality plumbers grease is worth purchasing for sure! If youve owned a incomming waterline filter, RV, home appliances, waterline quick connects, it keeps the seals from sticking, tearing, and stretching when needing to re-lube, especially swapping out filters. Have used vaseline before.... and it dries out and gets gummy after awhile and causes o rings to stretch out when removing.

Also, plumbers grease will get rid of those squeeky valve seals on (RV) sinks.

Note: Even better, install a water softner. They extend appliance life for....... a long time! Might never need replacing... unless the DW doesnt like them no more...😉

Had the same seal for almost 10 years. Haven’t put anything on it yet. When we did have leaking, it turned out to be the parts in the foot pedal were sticking and not allowing it to close completely. Lubed those and worked great since.

How often do you guys grease that seal? I never have but had to replace the seal once. Pretty easy job but I kind of thought the grease would be off that seal in just a few flushes?
"Plumber's grease does not degrade in water. It is specially designed to be highly water-resistant and will not wash away or dissolve into the water stream."

However, it can collect particle debri over time.

I used silicone based plumbers grease on o rings and quick connects. Ive done it once about 2 yrs ago and not had any issues since..

Now, if you (eat alot of nuts🙃, or,) get any grit in your sh!t, well... you might want to clean and apply more often.😉

I was watching "Changing Lanes" on You Tube and Chad was using 'Weld On 80427 Silk Seal Plumbers grease'. I bought a can (it's a tiny little can) It works really well. Just put a bit on the end of your gloved finger and apply it liberally around the seal. I do mine 2X a year. No issues.
Safe travels.

I lubricate my seal with plumbers grease when it leaks. once or twice per year.

replacing the seal isn't all that hard.. I pulled mine and simply cleaned it and it did not need replaced

Funny how Dometic's instructions on an OEM seal says it OK to use petroleum jelly, they likely want to sell more seals :)

We used Vaseline for 5 years with no issues until recently when our seal wouldn't hold water even after removal, good cleaning, lube and re-install, when the new seal came in, went to install it and found the old one was holding water just fine...

When folks say petroleum will degrade rubber over time, how much time are we talking?

I stand corrected, for Dometic toilets only. But I knew I read it somewhere, so I check the Thetford manual that came with our 3100RD when new. The ORM was a Thetford, and it says not to use petroleum Vaseline or vegetable oil. (I replace it with a Dometic writhin the first year of ownership. I knew I read it. Somewhere. Just goes to show the importance of doing your own research when making repairs and not trusting all the advice you get here including some of might. Sorry if I misinformed this group. My bad.
