I plan to salmon fish (first time) in a kayak on the Pere Marquette River near Ludington, MI in a few weeks (early September). Anyone have experience salmon fishing in the Great Lakes area that wish to share tips, ideas, things to consider, etc.?

I am from central Indiana and have fished for Northern Pike in Minnesota, as well as the traditional bass in Indiana. Never dealt with a Salmon though. Assume you reel these bad boys in with a net?

Lots of rules and regulations on fishing in Michigan, want to make sure I am following local laws as well.

Thanks in advance.

We haven't salmon fished but did kayak the Platte river (near Sleeping Bear Dunes) in early Sept a few years back and the salmon run was simply amazing!! Never seen so many fish all over the river , jumping and knocking on the kayak. (I'm sure the guys fishing hated to see us)

There were many in the CG filling little freezers with their daily catch.
