Anyone using Dish or DirectTV for your residential and RV service? We used to have Dish Pay-As-You-Go service but sold the motorhome, which had the satellite antenna mounted on top. We currently use Comcast for home TV and Internet but I am researching alternatives to cut costs and use one provider for both home and RV. Dish said they have an HD box that can be used for both. I'm sure DirectTV probably does too but haven't contacted them yet. Any input from others using a satellite company for both home and RV would sure be appreciated. Thanks!

We switched from DirecTV to DISH when we decided to get satellite for our RV. I like it good enough. It's very comparable and cheaper for home. The only thing I don't like about the RV setup is the receiver sucks. I added a hard drive for recording but it is so "old technology" that we can't watch one channel and record another. I'd really like to hear more about the DISH HD box that can go between home and RV because when we got our system last summer, they said that was not possible. Maybe that's only if you have a roof mounted satellite dish. The receiver we have is needed to direct the satellite.

I specifically did not want that which is another reason I had to switch from DirecTV to DISH. There are no portable or "carry out" dishes that get HD programming for DirecTV and that was a must for me.

I started looking at the features of each for on the road, and we were going to go with Dish. Then my wife ended up with an un-planned c-section and we cut out pay tv.

I use dish tailgater for rv and have dish at home, it's only $7 per month to have it in rv and works great, I set tailgater on roof and it sets up in minutes, since I'm already using dish I get same programming at home as ni do in rv

Two years ago, we were using Comcast for our internet and television. When we retired and bought the 337, we dropped Comcast for our television programming, but kept them just for the internet. There really isn't high speed internet available for us at home other than Comcast. For television, we had dish installed at home. We really like it. For the RV, we purchased a Winegard Pathway X2 dish, and a VIP211Z receiver. They work really well with our set up. The dish is portable so we can move it around to get a clear signal away from trees, buildings, etc. Another thing we like about this set up is that it's automatic. We just tell the receiver what state we're in and in about 5-10 minutes it's zero'd in on the satellite.

Overall, our Dish bill is quite a bit less than our Comcast bill was.

We have a wine gard X2 carryout with direct tv. When on the road, I bring my receivers from home. Works great except no HD. It auto finds satellites. Just set outside and plug it in. Use satellite AR app to verify clear sight to satellites. Call direct tech support to tell them my service location so I get local channels. Works flawlessy. No extra charge.

DirecTV does have a dish that you can take with you wherever you go you just take one of your boxes out of your house and take it with you when you get to where you're going you call DirecTV let them know what the zip code is and the the number on your box .and your all set . PS we had to buy a tripod for the dish

Yes they do but it doesn't receive HD programming. Only a roof mount will.

You have to use an HD box to get HD along with that I'm capable of receiving HD

What carry out do you have? I did what I thought was a ton of research and everything I found indicated that it didn't support HD, including DirecTV themselves :(

Having DirecTv HD DVR at home, we went with DirecTv HD for the trailer.

Didn't want a roof mounted satellite dish, never know when you might be parked under a tree. A portable unit like a Winegard Tailgater wasn't an option as we wanted HD and to stay with DirecTv.

Bought a dish and adjustable tripod from TV4RV.com. Having read that aligning an HD dish was difficult, also purchased an inexpensive signal strength meter, only used it a couple of times and don't really need it.

When leaving home grab the satellite receiver from the house and take it with us, no need for a second receiver for the trailer.

At the camp site, set up the tripod and dish, lookup the satellite coordinates on the Internet, adjust the azimuth (tilt), and point the dish to the longitude of the satellite.

we have been Direct TV customers for 7 years and have up graded many times with new products they have come out with. years ago you could take a dish out with you on the road and easily aim the dish and find channels. now the Dish industry has gone high tech and its harder to aim it your self, with that said i now have a Winegard Carryout G2 portable dish all you have to do is bring your receiver from your home and plug it in on the road when you park. very simple but this is just the start of the frustration come in. if you want to have TV in other areas in your rig you must wire HDMI cables through out the walls because the RV industry have not done this yet. at this time you wont have HD channels but you get very clear TV with all the channels you have at the house. the wiring the GD come with are RG6 coax but you need several receivers at every locations to watch TV. if they made a conversion from HDMI to coax it would be eaiser but they dont. i am now looking into the Direct TV Genie with wireless slave receivers, this could work with a little more fine tuning. i will post an update when i out fit my new 303.

I have direct tv using t he genie. Works without any extra wiring in camper. Genie uses swm (single wire multiplex) technology. Single coax to each box. Can watch dvr on any tv. Different channels on different tv sets. If they have wireless receivers, not needed but sure if would work too.

I have been a Dish customer for 17 years, started using for my RV 10 years ago. I now have the Joey and the Hopper setup for my home and use a VIP211 for the receiver in the RV.
Have had several roof mounted tracking antennas but prefer the Winegard Pathway X2 for the ease of use and don't have to deal with a tree always in the way. When I get to where I am going to park the RV I use the Dish for my RV app to spot the satellites and just set the Winegard down and it auto finds the satellites. Dish will allow you to have 2 - 211 receivers if you want and the X2 will will handle 2. Over the years I have found that for HD service for the RV's that Dish is a better solution.

Great responses. Sure gives me a lot to consider before making the switch from Comcast to Dish. Does anyone use Dish "Best DSL Internet" service? They state it gets up to 40 mbps but I haven't found anyone that is currently using it.

I know of no one, our local Dish Network says its better than dial up, not as good as DSL. All of the RV people I know use their smart phone for internet use.

I agree with using your smart phone for Internet, I believe your laptop can use the same service as your smart phone

The DSL they offer is whatever is provided by your local telco. The speed will depend on how far the wiring to your location is from the CO or DSLAM. We tried CenturyLink and we're promised 20Mb speeds. We got just over 10 and are close enough they should have been able to provide better. Between the outages and billing issues, we cancelled them. I noted some details at http://rvgunner.com/rvintnet.htm
