Self-leveling sealant

I applied Alpha 1021 to a skylight and solar panels, but it appears ugly collecting dirt and looks to be failing exposing cracks, it is also super gummy like bubble gum? Maybe I’m supposed to be using 5121? The factory stuff after 5 yrs, still looks clean/white and firm, much better than the 1021 I put on. Anybody have an opinion if I should be using the 5121. Can anyone confirm the 5121 doesn’t collect dirt like 1021. Here’s a pic of the stuff I put next to the factory clean stuff.

I've used the Alpha 1021 and mine looks nothing like that. Where did you get it?

I applied some from Amazon, and it looked like that and settled too much. It was naught in the spring of 2023, so prob go some of that bad batch ppl are taking about. So then I bought some from the Dealer here, General RV, and that is how it looks now. Just collects all the dirt it can, and it needs to be done again cuz I can see cracks forming.

Does anyone know if I put down the 5121 alphathane sealant, if I have to use their 4110 primer first, or just give it a good cleaning prior to applying?

Since I used the 1021 I can't comment specifically on 5121. The docs recommend a good cleaning but don't specify the primer.

This picture shows how the 1021 looks on my roof. My tech did the vents, etc, and I did the solar panels. Pine needles and other debris stick to it since it still is a bit sticky, but the seal is great.

Ya, that looks much better than mine. I’m not sure why, but I’ve laid 1021 down twice now, and both times the sealant collects all kind of grunge.

I had the same experience the tube I got off Amazon collected grunge but the tube I bought at camping world did not. I read the shelf life is only one year so I’m guessing the tube I got from Amazon was expired. Unfortunately I couldn’t find any date stamping on the tubes.

Thanks, good to know I’m not the only one! I think I’m gonna try the 5121 product, hoping for the firmer smoother factory finish.

Check which one is designed for your roof material. I don't think that they are interchangeable.

It appears I have the AlphaPly, so according to the doc that dmurdockrv posted it should take the 5121; however, I reached out to Alpha Systems and they relied this when I asked which one I should use for AlphaPly: During the time of manufacture installation, they must use 5121. Aftermarket is recommended to use 1021, but if you choose to use 5121, you’ll also need the 4110 primer to prime any polypropylene plastic roof fixtures prior to using the 5121. The 4110 primer will crack polycarbonate.

So apparently you can use either(at least on AlphaPly), but they said 1021 is easier for aftermarket use. I just want it to match the factory stuff which is still clean white and shiny after five years.

Alpha answered my question on the 4110 primer, thought I’d share for future readers:

“The 4110 primer is only used on the polypropylene plastic components. You don’t need to use it on the roof membrane prior to applying the 5121.”
