We just bought a new Reflection 315 RLTS TT. One thing that annoys us is the amount of light and heat that comes thru the skylight over the kitchen island. I suppose I could spray paint over it but there may be times we want the light to come through. Any suggestions? How have others dealt with this?

You can buy aftermarket shades that open and close. After we make a couple of trips in ours, we will be deciding whether to buy one. I don't have the manufacturerer info or website though. I've seen them mentioned on one of the forums.

We have the same skylight in our bedroom. You can buy a thick "pillow" at Camping World that fits the spot perfectly. You just push it in there when you want to block the light or take it out. Works great!

X2. I think we got ours in the RV section at Walmart for about $8 apiece. Keep them in both the kitchen and bathroom vents at all times when the vents aren't in use (the bedroom has an AC unit, so no vent to plug there). They REALLY help in both hot and cold weather.

Take the screws out of the cover that go into the ceiling and go to Home Depot or Lowes and get some light window tint and apply it to the outside of the cover you just removed and then re install it.Done !

Thanks. This might just do the trick. It sure beats my original idea of duct taping newspaper over the skylight. lol

If you buy the tint that "clings " vs the other type that sticks like tape it is much easier to work with and looks very nice after a couple of day`s of sunshine on it.

I took some measurements today and I need to do something too. The outside air temperature was 91. The ceiling measured 88F. The opening for the skylight was 108F!!! I can only imagine how hot it will be when summer gets to Arizona.

I used an inexpensive windshield shade from wal mart. Removed the interior skylight cut the shade to fit. Duct taped in place and reassembled. Allows soft white light in while controlling the vast majority of heat and light.

Found this installed on a trailer at a show in Phoenix,
We own a 29RS and would like to find one, we have white felt purchased at Walmart covering our skylight.
We spend winters in Arizona, and found that the heat was too much.
If anyone can find one to fit it would be great.

To clarify, are you referring to a skylight (non-opening) or a roof vent (opening). If you're referring to a roof vent, you can do what several folks have suggested and buy the pillow that is made to fill the opening and block the sun and act as an insulator. Or you could simply add a vent cover such as the Maxxair or Maxxair II. It will block the direct sunlight and depending on the color you choose (white, black, smoke), you can let some of the light come thru or block nearly all of it.

If you are talking about a skylight, then your options are more limited. The most effective solution would be to remove the inner trim ring and pull out the inner clear plastic window and have it tinted with a UV blocking film and then reinstall it. It Weill still allow light thru but block the majority of the heat.

I have answered this in a couple topics because it is such an easy, cheap mod and made my life so much better! We are full-time and the skylight is wonderful, but it is right over the bed. My trailer came with a useless shade - it blocked NO LIGHT - I just figured out an easy way to make a really nice looking retractable shade for under $10. Actually for $10 you could make 4 shades for the skylight I have (13x24)

I put the instructions and a bunch of pics here. I don't know why the skylight looks square in the photo. Just wish I had figured it out a lot sooner!!!

Let me know if this helps :)

Liz, that is an awesome DIY project. It looks very professionally done!

We have a similar issue with the skylight in the shower allowing light - too much light- to shine through in the mornings.. It shines right into the bedroom.. I went to my local marine canvas person with the inside plastic housing. They made a piece of fabric that we simply snap on when we go to bed and can unsnap anytime.. Its a Sunbrella type material so no mold or mildew ...

Amazon sells that same one - I bought one and spray-painted the plastic to match the wood on the kitchen ceiling above my island (S2930RL). Cost was about $45 and it works great so far. The bathroom skylight and the kitchen skylight are the same size in our camper.

The one I posted is supposed to have heat shielding to help reflect light back out. I live in Phoenix, so looking for any little thing I can do to keep the heat out.
