Sofa is starting to peel, is it feasible to get it re-upholstered? or just replace...

The sleeper sofa in our 2150RB has started peeling, its only 4 years old and been super maintained (no kids or pets). I'm going to stop by an upholstery shop tomorrow for a quote but I imagine its expensive and not sure it will even look correct.

Has anyone done this? Replacing is not cheap (with real leather loveseat) and working out the removable table mount...plus the entire challenge of getting a loveseat through the door. FYI width on the existing chaise sofa is 80".

Searching this forum will reveal NUMEROUS links on this topic; many include photos.

I know I've seen one person that went the re-upholster route and their pictures looked fantastic. I am sure there are many vendors that would do a fine job. If I went this route, I would want to go with someone for whom I had referrals that I trusted. I've also seen pictures from folks that have purchased from a variety of different vendors; there are several options that will get through the door (I believe most of these have removable backs).

I have been in a holding pattern on this for a while now. I initially had the issue only on my recliners, but now the sofas (I have two sofas) are a problem as well. All that said, I will be taking action soon, and am leaning toward purchasing new.

Thanks for the feedback, I did a couple of simple searches....didn't see much on this so I'll do a deeper search. It's a real shame Grand Design used this cheap stuff, there's a variety of non-leather fabrics that hold up without peeling.

Grand Design and all the other brands knowingly used the same junk and just don't care. Both of our recliners are in the landfill because of this. It's a dirty shame.

The problem is widespread, i just did two separate searches and saw numerous threads. I searched "peeling" and "payne" and had several come up.

Bad news is that once the peeling starts, it gets worse fast. Good news is that there are several options.

Many of the posts have great pictures and include prices.

One of the options is to get the "new and improved" version from Lippert; initial feedback I have read on that furniture is positive. I know that I contacted them, and once I sent them my VIN and pictures, they offered me a discount.

I think I have the "new and improved" in my 2022. It's more of a fabric than a coated vinyl. No peeling, but I can still tell they're junk. You can feel springs in the seat bottom cushions, the left side recliner takes excessive force to lock back in place once you have it up, etc. If I full-timed, I'd replace with residential furniture, perhaps wall-hugger theater seats that have a removable table.

Furniture stores sell the same crap. What ever you get just make sure the backs come off and it is not made of Bonded Leather.

We replaced the sofa with the Lippert newer style vynil , it's about 2 and a half yrs and is holding up well, even with the punishment the dogs give it. Our love seat is leather double recliner (removable backs) and just barely made it in and past the hutch in our 303. Measure twice as they say. For large spaces with sofa recliners be sure they break down into pieces or getting it in could be interesting.

Just me but I wouldn't waste a penny on recovering that junk. You need to look at the frame construction and decide if it will hold up and is worth $$$ to recover. Lippert aka Thomas PITA furniture is all made in China to cheap standards. GD doesn't expect it to get used full time and 40 nights a year is probably still beyond their time frame.

Go to your local furniture store and look around for something better. Stay away from the Ashley/Mor type furniture stores. All they sell is better looking cheap China crap. Find a furniture store that carries quality furniture. I will say though we have Lazy Boy stuff in our house and it has always held up very well but it's nowhere near the best quality. We do sit on it everyday for years on end vs occasional like in our TT.

If you're full time and expect to be then you'll need to spend some $$$ on something nice. If your just a 40 night a year camper then you can get by with some better mid range stuff.
You mention leather recliners. Plan on dropping some real big coin for real leather recliners.

I have reupholstered a lot of things; sofas, chairs, pick up seats and even a Karmann Ghia. From my experience, unless you are in love with a piece of furniture, it is not worth reupholstering unless you do it yourself. You can probably buy new for less than you would pay someone to do it for you.
If you decide to do it yourself, remove the old material carefully and that becomes your pattern. Take pictures or lots of notes
for reassembly.

Great feedback and recommendations, I've ruled out reupholstering since y'all are so right...it's lipstick on a real ugly pig...

Feeling your pain . . .

We had the same thing happen in our 2018 2800BH. Our sofa is the recliner style and seemed super nice. Within in a couple years it started flaking and, before long, it was unbearable. We were obviously ticked off and the extended warranty we purchased did not cover it. (What a surprise.) However, our dealer had an upholstering contact and that person had us pick out marine grade vinyl to reupholster it. It now looks and feels amazing. Unfortunately, the people who did the work did not bother to put all of the screws and wires back and it has never been right since in that regard. Husband says he will get around to it one day. Luckily, it is still functional.

Now, we spent about $500 getting this done but it was a few years ago so it will probably be much more than that by now. Of course, not long after we did this, all of the vinyl on the dinette cushions, headboard, valances, etc., started flaking. In fact, it got so bad that we couldn't stand to be in there. So, we purchased nice material from a local fabric store and my husband painstakingly recovered the headboard and all of the trim pieces. We purchased some nice elastic fit cushion covers for the dinette cushions but they did not really fit on the back ones so I stitched them up by hand to kind of cinch them up to be more appropriately fitting. Works for me! Honestly, the awesome job my husband did made our rig look SO much prettier because we used bright colors and patterns. It totally pops and I love it! I was never a huge fan of all of the dark vinyl because it was just too cave-like. Now it looks like we are in the Keys as soon as we step inside.

The next order of business for us is working on the awful cabinet door facings. They are real wood but they used paper for veneer. Of course, that is all peeling off. I have the idea of just semi-sanding them all down to look shabby chic. I think that would be fine but husband has other thoughts.

Regardless, RV stuff is apparently meant to be temporary until you trade it in 3 years later. Oh, well. They are not going to get us that easily! Have a GREAT day! :)

I do. I had two chairs delivered yesterday. The sit very high, the back seems permanently reclined, and the seat feels like your sitting on cement. At least my dog likes it.
