Starlink Unlimited Roaming

I was grandfathered in on the Residential plus Portability plan. A week ago, I got an email saying that they are doing away with that plan and I will be moved to the Unlimited Roaming for $165 a month.

Starlink changed the way that we travel by giving us access to places that have no cell service or any other kind of high speed internet. I work fulltime so fast internet is super important to me.

During the day, I am typically doing Teams meeting while my wife is streaming TV. At night, it is mostly TV streaming. For Teams, I need a fast and uninterrupted connection. My current Starlink plan gives me that. When would get to a place where we are staying for more than a few days, I would change my address to that place and we would have the speeds that we need.

I am very concerned with the new plan because on it, I am always deprioritized.

Do any of you have this plan and is it as bad as I think it will be?

Thanks

We have been very satisfied with our Starlink roaming plan and have never experienced any throttling.

Same here with our roaming plan since DW works remotely. Did not have any issues streaming or working.

All good. Even spent the summer traveling through Canada and Alaska. There were only two locations we couldn't get a signal. One was due to trees though, the other was in the open but just no signal to be had. Otherwise, it has never failed us.

A friend has the gen 3 starlink unit. He was in Mexico a few weeks back, in Rocky Point , Pureto Penasco area. He had No reception problems there. Only thing I have heard him complain about is the $165.00 fee per month. LOL .

We want to do that trip. I figured we would head up there (from FL) while there is still snow on the ground and come back when the snow returns.

I don't love the $165, but the money is the least of my worries. I can't be in a Teams meeting with the signal going out.

We left from MN mid-May, spent a month going through CAN, don't miss that. Spring flowers all the way up and the bears come out to munch on them. It was a mild spring so we could have left a little earlier, although there was still plenty of snow at the higher elevations. We left AK end of August and spent a month going down a different route through CAN. I was concerned about waiting too long and getting snow on the way back as we went down the West side of the Rockies in CAN, but we didn't hit any at all so certainly could have waited longer. We were back home by Oct 1. But again, it may have just been a mild fall as I believe it can easily snow in the mountains early Oct from what I hear. If I could be so bold...I'd suggest making sure you hit the salmon run in Valdez, great salmon (they are thick), bear, sea lion viewing, etc. If you take the Cassier, don't miss Hyder. Not as many bear but great viewing/picture opportunities and driving up to Salmon Glacier is fantastic. Boondocking on Old Denali Hwy is pretty nice too. The entire trip was a feast for the eyes. Anyway, hope you make the trip one day!

We had fun in Hyder also. Walking the boardwalk, we just missed the wolf sighting. Going up to Salmon glacier we were in heavy fog. Wound up turning around half way up. The campgrounds are in Stewart BC. Both Stewart and Hyder are small towns. Only the Canadians have a check point there. This was the only time the Canadian border guard was cool. He just BSed about the wolf and let us through without scanning the passport. We had been through there several times, maybe our license plate came up on his computer...who knows.

As stated before, the only issue is the price. 100% increase over the last three camping seasons. We use it as a fallback in case the fiber goes out here in rural NE, but man, I'd like to have that $80 increase back. At least the newer Dishy units are cheaper!

I have had throttling issues in a few places, mostly central and northeastern Florida (so far). No obstructions. But the speed varied widely, from peaks of 120 to lows of 4 (yes, 4 Mbps!). Mostly time-of-day dependent (evenings were slowest). Which means either throttling or just too many users in those areas.

The roaming plan was $150 when I started. Musk better use all the extra money to put up more or better satellites, otherwise I'll be looking for other options.

I am in the Austin, Tx area, full-timing and we are getting throttled. We are about done with StarLink. What other options do we have?

I’ve been using the gen 2 Starlink for over a year. Currently in Ocala FL. It has been hit or miss here. I’m on a lot of zooms, will be interrupted for a few seconds or get a warning about low connection. There are a lot of Starlink users in the area which may be degrading the service. I also have a T-Mobile plan thru Mobile Must Have. I often switch to it w/o a problem.
Access in the west was much more reliable.

I’ve only had Starlink for a couple months, but I started with it in Dallas. There, I could definitely tell that there was congestion. During off hours (first thing in the morning), the speed was great. But lots of times during the day or evening, the speed would be under 10 Mbps (which was my threshold to try my cellular hotspot).

Based on the responses here, my guess is that you’ll notice the biggest difference when you’re in a location with a lot of other Starlink users. That can either mean a big city (lots and lots of people, so even if a small percentage use Starlink then there’s a lot of Starlink users) OR a place with fewer people but no good Internet options so most of them use Starlink (remote, medium-sized towns). In both cases, you may be able to use your phone’s hotspot ability to pinch-hit if Starlink isn’t working well enough.

If $$ is no object, check into a commercial business account. We have this on our Cowlitz County Search & Rescue command trailer, and have priority if the proverbial SHTF ever happens (or Mr St Helens blows again). I think our monthly bill is $210.

I had Starlink, got rid ofnitn3 months ago. I was on the roaming package and came south for the winter. Couldn't connect. After waiting over a week for support to call me back, there is no direct line to them, I was told I could only use it for 3 months in any other country but your home one. Told them that's not what your website advertises, and I had only been in US for a week. Then they told me to change my address to my US one, still didn't work. Then they said I'd have to send it all back and order a US version. Wasn't doing that either. So, I packed it all back up and sent to back to them. Credit to them, I got 90% of the cost of unitnback, as I had only had system 3 months.
I am hoping someone else will come up with something similar as I won't give Elon any more money.
Good luck though.

Have you considered switching to the residential plan -- and then just changing the address each time you move? I use google maps to find the location and then update it before I arrive at my new location. The only issue is if you go into an area not accepting residential, then you'll have to switch to the unlimited roaming plan for the rest of that period and then downgrade back to residential the next billing period (and you may have the same prioritization issue you would've anyway). I haven't had Starlink for long, but I've found it easy to change as long as you change from a cheaper plan to a more expensive plan...otherwise, you'll need to wait for the next billing period.

Here is a map that shows the waitlist areas you can't activate/move a residential plan immediately. |

Hi Rob,
Yes, I spoke to Starlink about this and they said I could do it. That is what I did with the Residential + Portability plan. So, I am not sure why they got rid of that plan... I can basically do the same thing by hopping between the two plans.
