Three blowouts on one trip!

I fully concor with Rob. I've put 15,000 miles on my original equipment Westlake load range G tires (made in 2019) in the last 18 months with no problems. Looking to replace them over the winter, due to their age, but not quite sure about what to replace them with. What's the current thinking on Load Range G tires?

Goodyear G614 or Sailun S637. Both are good tires (I've had two sets of Sailuns and no issues with either).

When I had TTs I had MANY ST tire failures. Then I made the jump to LT tires, and never looked back. From 2006 to 2021 I ran Michelin XPS RIBS. Not a single issue in 15 years.

I ran goodyear RIB also for over 10 years. Loved them, but had to raise my 5er at the time, not a GD, to have enough wheel well clearance. I think the Endurance are a good tire also.
 
So what I learned from this is:
1. TPMS doesn't do much good unless you have a slow leak- not sure I will buy another
2. Change tires after 5-6 years. Tires had less than 6000 miles and were kept in the barn or covered up with covers.
3. Never buy Westlakes as what's the chance of three blowing on one short 300 mile trip??? It's like they had a built in expiration and were rigged to blow after a certain time. LOL

That is why I replaced my TST with Tire Minder. On my 5er my Co-Pilot noticed that temp and pressures was increasing on one tire and higher than the rest and climbing. I slowed down and headed for the shoulder and at 15 MPH the alarm went off about the same time the tire came apart. The Tire Minder display shows all your tires at once and not the blink blink blink one tire at time. The display shows my motorhome and the "NS" are my toad Jeep Rubicon that isn't attached.

I will not use a Goodyear. That company sold me a lot of ST tires (Marathon) that they knew to be junk, while proclaiming in their advertising that we needed to use their ST tires. They do not deserve any more of my money.
 
This is great news Rob. Thank you for posting that. I just checked and I have the G's and I'm feeling a bit better about it, now.
 
In case you couldn't guess, Westlake don't cover collateral damage and you better make sure you take pictures of each tire. I figured the warranty wasn't more than 2 years, so didn't bother taking a picture of the second tire before the service guy took it away with him (I already had one shredded tire in the trailer). Turns out they have an astonishing 3 year warranty, so I got $105. Could have had $210. Unfortunately, Goodyears cost over $150 and shipping alone for the wrecked sheet metal skirt is $1000 because dealers can't be bothered to get pieces shipped in a trailer delivery. ?

Both times I needed the sheet metal skirts replaced I made a trip out to the GD factory and had them do it. My insurance company paid me directly and it was enough to cover the entire trip... and then some.
 
Yeah, I made the mistake of not making sure I pick up at factory as I passed by, then found out the dealers rape you on shipping. The part itself is $100, comes painted, they will cut to length; all I had to do was get out the die grinder and cut the arch. :mad2: Now I have to design/draw it up, find a local shop, and get it made. Will still be within my deductible if I don't include my time...

The sheet metal is probably coming from the manufacturer, not the GD factory.

Nope, the sheet metal comes from GD... they stock many panel styles because there are a wide variety of different bends and widths. If you order a metal skirt it comes with the proper bends for your vin #, then it's up to you to cut out for the wheel wells, heater, water heater, etc... even the holes for the tire crank and the emergency slide crank have to be "field located" and cut. I was there this past April getting my metal skin replaced and they accidentally put a huge ding in the new one right after it was installed... it only set me back about an hour as their team removed everything again and marked up another to cut and install it. They apologized for the delay and threw in some GD swag .. BBQ grilling gifts.

So I have been researching TPMS systems and comparing Tire Minder to TST. The Tire Minder shows all of your tires at the same time but the tire pressure is refreshed every 4 minutes. The Tire Minder checks for alerts every 6 seconds. The TST sends fast leaks immediately but refreshes tire pressure and temperature every 2 minutes.
So if I had a fast leak then in theory the TST would send that data immediately where the Tire Minder might take up to 6 seconds.

I see several issues. The main one is a blowout (like the three I had) must have been instantaneous. They didn't leak air either fast or slow- they just blew! No tpms is gonna be able to help with that.
The second issue is that since these are battery operated sensors they can't send data continuously.

From what I can figure it's not worth it for me to change tpms brands.

TireMinder Smart TPMS - The system will check for the following alerts every 6 seconds (please note, if no issue is found, the transmitters will provide updated tire data every 4 minutes):

Rapid Leak - Pressure loss of 3 PSI or more in less than 2 minutes.
Slow Leak - Pressure loss of 6 PSI or more in 2 to 10 minutes.
Low Pressure - Pressure loss of 15% or more of the baseline pressure.
High Pressure - Pressure increase of 20% or more of the baseline pressure.
High Temperature - Internal tire temperature at or above 167°F (75°C).
High Temperature - Internal tire temperature that exceeds 185°F (85°C).


TST

The 507 sensors send the tire pressure and temperature readings
to the display every two (2) minutes. If a tire is outside of the
parameters that were set, the audible alarm will sound and the
red LED light will immediately flash. The tire in question, pressure
or temperature for that tire, and warning type will also flash. The
audible alarm can be silenced for a short while by pushing any
of the buttons on the front of the display. The red warning light
will continue to flash until the pressure or temperature issue is
resolved and brought back into your preset levels.
Fast Leak Alert
When a fast tire leak is detected, the sensor will send that data
immediately to the display The audible alarm will sound and the
red LED light will immediately flash.
 
Be interesting to check and find out what the time delay is for loss of signal from the tire sensor to the monitor, between the two systems. The TST used to be an hour, but I don't know if that has changed with the new system.

Same here! I've seen so many blowouts with ST tires that I despise them to a "T". My last two Weekend Warrior toyhaulers, which were tri-axles, I immediately switched to 16" wheel and Michelin LT XPS Ribs. Never had one lick of a problem with them, in fact, in one set I had for 12 years I bet I didn't have to add any air but once or twice. The only reason I replaced them was for sidewall cracking after all those years- the treads looked brand new! Now we've got a 2023 Reflection 320MKS that came with Goodyear Endurances and I can hardly wait to wear them out a bit before I switch again- even if I've got to change wheels again.

I'd totally do that on the next set, but waaay too big for travel trailers. Keeping an eye on the Continental Van Contacts.

Depends on how bad you want reliable tires. I ran the Michelin XPS RIBS on two travel trailers. A 2001 Fleetwood Wilderness 26H, and a 2011 Palomino Sabre 30BHDS. A small lift block was needed on both units, and the Wilderness needed the 5 lug drums swapped out to 6 lugs.
That was cheap compared to what all the ST tires cost me. I bought into the ST propaganda before them. I am sometimes a slow learner, some would say stubborn, hard headed etc.But I do eventually learn.
