Travel with a gallon of Gas

Hey - Just wondering if anyone out there travels w/ a stored Gallon of Gas "just in case"

Thanks -

No. Carrying gasoline isn’t at all safe

It is a very volatile liquid

Should be ok if it’s stored in an approved gasoline container and not kept in an enclosed area of the RV or tow vehicle.

Pretty much anyone who mows their grass does this routinely.

All the time when we packed our Honda gen with us. Since getting solar we don't need the gen enough to warrant packing it.
Think about all the ATV owners that go riding. They pack gas all the time. If you have a truck then stick it in something and strap them both to the truck tie down hooks.

Yes packing gas for things like atv s snow machines and yard equipment is a necessity but doesn’t make it safe
But to carry it for emergency only I wouldn’t

Even an approved container on the back of a truck will expand very rapidly in the summer heat

YMMV

With the proper gas can and securely containing it in the back of a truck no issue. In trailer storage compartment - no
You don't list your truck or trailer - might want to create a signature block.

When I had a TT with my full size Bronco I got a Jerry can and mount and fit it on the front tung in front of the propane bottles. I have seen folks carry them on the rear of the trailer on a bumper mount. For my 5th wheel I built a compartment container box (open top 12" side walls) that I carry both gas and diesel in (approved containers). Its located at the rear of my truck bed on one side and everything is strapped down so it cant move. I carry my Honda generators on the other side in a similar box, except they are locked to the truck bed. I set it up to be able to run them in place.

I was sitting at a red light and there was a truck in front of us. We watched a container of gasoline break out in flames as we were just sitting there.. scary to see. As for safety for short transports it is likely ok but out in the blazing hot sun for several hours.. I wouldn't do it

Guess it falls into the if you feel safe or not category

I would never carry extra gas. In addition to being unsafe, it smells and is messy. It's the reason I have a dual fuel generator.

A good point here is a gas can out in the sun, or even warm weather will cause the gas inside to vaporize and expand in a sealed container. Gasoline or even diesel containers aren't required to have a pressure relief like a propane tank.

Our Tundra has just a 26gal gas tank and I’ve often been tempted to bring along a gas can but can’t bring myself to do it for fear of a potential fire. I have a nice metal 5gal can with safety pressure release too.

What I do before traveling is spend time using a combination of google maps satellite view, Gasbuddy friendly RV stations, Love’s & Pilot Flying J locations, and this pdf I got from another forum, although I’m not sure how up to date it is:

WhittleBurner any way to fix my pdf link so it’s not a black box?

Question:
Are the gas tanks in the momentums safe??
Thanks:
Bob A.

Safe until they are not

It goes along with the lifestyle of a toy hauler

The op asked whether they should bring gas just in case. Some of us feel this is a bad idea
Yes landscapers and off roaders etc carry gasoline for the activity they are doing and it is necessary but still doesn’t mean it is safe to do so

I carry an extra 5 gallons of gasoline every time I camp. I always boon dock so I need it for my generators. I also like the idea of having a gallon or 2 to use in my truck if needed.

I store it in an approved gas can that is sealed, strapped down, under my tonneau cover in the bed of my truck. I have done this for the last 5 years with no issues (knock on wood).

carried 5 gallons with us on our trip out west last summer from IN to Yellowstone and back. Glad we had it...combination of strong headwinds and couldn't get into a planned gas station ran us short and so I had to use it.

Yes, for my generator and it does double duty as emergency truck gas. In the back of the truck usually. The metal NATO style jerry cans are well worth the money. No smell, no leaks, no expansion and should last a lifetime. I usually use the smaller 10L (2.5 gal) version but I have a 20L too.

Alternately, I have seen "emergency gas" containers at auto parts stores. About a gallon I think. One time use container, supposedly safe to store in a trunk and synthetic gas that stays good. Expensive, but better than walking I suppose.

I carry an empty container that I could put gas in if I had to and generally never go below 1/4 tank of gas in the truck when traveling. That worked for me on two cross country trips and many other shorter trips and I never had to use the empty container.

Yes, we've got a two gallon jug that fits nicely in the utility box in the truck bed, out of the sun. The gasoline is for the generator. One advantage of an 8 foot truck box is that we still have room for two jugs of diesel and the generator itself between the utility box and the hitch, all forward of the arc of the 5th wheel pin box.
Why two jugs of diesel? We don't carry them on every trip, and not always full, but there are some big gaps between fuel stops in some regions of the north and also in the event of a major power regional outage ... not uncommon during major thunder storms ... those 40 litres of fuel will easily get us another 200 kilometres (120 miles) down the road.
