underside of bedroom slide

About 6 months ago I noticed an area on the underside of the bedroom slide (outer edge where the center roller rides) that was wearing through the black coating covering the OSB. The dealer said it was normal wear an tear and applied some tape over the area. No big deal, right? The tape finally came off and the area is worn much worse as well as being wet. One thing I know is OSB and water don't go well together and the moisture seems to be migrating along the outer edge of the area. I need some help here since, over time, the area seems to be getting soft and slowly coming apart. We are out of warranty by 3 weeks. See attached photo.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Andy,

Our 369's are the same age and ours doesn't have any "wear and tear" as your dealer calls it. From the way the photo looks, it seems that the roller is doing the damage when the slide is closed. Is the dampness water or is it oily? Do you have any liquid stored under the bed that could have leaked? How does the middle roller look compared to the other two?

Steve

After talking to Jerry in customer service, I checked the extrusion along the lower outside of the slide and found that it had shifted down just enough to break the silicone seal along almost the entire length of the slide. Per Jerrys suggestion, I applied a bead of new silicone to seal the gap and prevent any more water from getting in until I can get it to the shop for the pros to look at. Thanks Jerry for your reassuring words and suggestions.

Steve,
No liquids stored under the bed and all the rollers look good. I'm convinced that water entered along the extrusion and settled near the middle roller position. It was clear to see that the shift broke the seal. Hopefully, the water didn't have enough time to do any major damage to the OSB. We will see once I get it to the shop and they remove the extrusion for a closer look. Either way, Grand Design is there to make it right. What an amazing company!

Hi Andy (@thompsons 369rl),

My understanding is that you've talked directly with Jerry McCarthy, our VP-Service Operations, this afternoon and discussed your concern. So unless I hear differently from you, I will consider this as having been handled.

Best regards,
~ Janice

Yes. Thanks Janice.

I would encourage other owners to do a self inspection of the area shown in the attached photo to make sure the seal along the extrusion is intact.

OSB ... Really . I think Im schocked to hear OSB is on this trailer VS plywood.

I'm not sure what would be shocking about using OSB vs plywood. Not uncommon in the RV industry. In fact, my house's roof and sub floor material is OSB and it has survived fine for over 25 years in a wet climate. If it gets wet or moisture is trapped for prolonged periods, that's when there are problems. Moisture will degrade either material.

On my 2022 340RDX I have a similar issue going on under the large kitchen slide. The undercoating is coming off the plywood on 2 of the roller areas. GD said it was out of warranty and go to a dealer. I am looking for a paint that will adhere to the plywood.

Welcome to the forum. This thread is almost 10 years old, you might want to start a new one.
