Using a memory foam mattress on Murphy bed?

We are looking at downsizing our 22RBE to a 17MKE. The stock Murphy bed mattress will NOT work for us. We replaced the stock mattress in our 22RBE with an 8" memory foam queen. Very comfortable.
Could I use a regular memory foam mattress in the murphy bed or would I need to purchase a foldable Murphy bed mattress?
I know we could always use a topper if needed but those are always sliding around on the bed.
Thanks

Pretty sure a standard memory foam mattress would work well in your Murphy bed. We put one in a sleeper sofa and it has been fine.

Very few foam mattresses are 100% memory foam - they are usually sandwiches of different foams to provide combinations of support and comfort. That said, many foam mattresses come compressed in a box (ours did) and expand to their full size when the vacuum wrapper is removed. I would think this type of mattress would be well suited to a Murphy bed (though they can be heavy).

Thanks. We're not so concerned about the weight. We pack pretty light as we're not full timers.
My concern is that a thicker mattress without a definitive folding point would flex enough to fit into the frame when the bed is lifted.

I was thinking about the weight on the Murphy bed mechanism - not the trailer.

Duh. :stupid: I didn't even think about that. Just figured I'd have to lift harder.

Just checked out the mattress we have now and it doesn't flex easily at all, so might need a different one.

What did you end up putting on your Murphy?

I just grabbed a New-2-Us 17MKE and the factory Serta mattress is to "too hard" for my better half.

I'm thinking a topper may be our only option ...

Still have the 22RBE for now. Heading out to Panama City Beach this morning for waterfront campsite.

Finally got the MKE and got rid of the standard mattress after the first night.
We got a Sleepy's Snug 8" RV Queen memory foam from Mattress Firm. Doesn't have any fiberglass in it like alot of foam mattresses do.
On sale on their website now for President's day.
Very comfortable and fits perfect in the bed. It's a little heavier but lifts and bends easily.
I think the residential queen size would fit fine and not stick out any further than the edge of the folded down couch.

Interesting comments. We got a brand new 2023 Grand Design Imagine XLS 17MKE, and we love it, mostly. BUT, the mattress that GD uses for the Murphy bed is very poor, and we are looking to replace it. I see that some of you seem to be using a non-foldable short queen magic foam mattress, which surprises me, especially since your mattress is an 8 inch. Is that working OK for you? I was concerned that the folding point of the foam might damage the foam or create a low spot in it. So is folding up the bed not harming the magic foam? That is my concern. I see that Camping World also offers a folding type mattress for the Murphy beds, so we have been looking at that one as well. So what are the reports?

We just got back from a 2 week trip. We LOVE our Sleepy's Snug 8" mattress. Very comfortable. No problem at all with folding the bed up. No indent or low spot at all in the bed so far.

FL_Guy - So I found the Sleepys Snug 8 online, but the $599 online list price was a bit steep for us. A comfortable mattress is important, so we will have to consider our options.

Check Mattress Firm outlet https://www.mattressfirm.com/8-medium-memory-foam-mattress/5637357576.p?variantid=5637357585
Listing for $309. Drop down the menu on the left side of the page and start a chat with a "sleep specialist" and ask if there are any discounts. Usually they will give you additional money off. Ours was $249 with free shipping.
Mattress we got was brand new.
Good luck

FL-Guy - Since you have passed along a positive purchase idea to us, here's one I will pass back to you. Being a newby for RV trailers, once we started pulling it, I REALLY missed seeing what was behind me. All I could see was the big Imagine logo. But I didn't want to spend tons of money on the Furrion camera. So I bought the AMTIFO "A8" RV Backup Camera with 7 inch display. It can be plugged right into the connection on the back of the 17MKE, so it was convenient. And it cost $139.99 on Amazon. Actually, right now I see that it is on sale at $113.98 on Amazon. We haven't used all of its features, but I now can see behind the trailer, and I really like that. Maybe you already have a backup camera, but if not, this one was cheap and easy and worked OK for us. Make sure it is the "A8" version with the 1080P 7 inch display. I didn't buy any side cameras. Cheers.

What are you using for a monitor for the camera? Never mind, I see it came with the monitor. Interesting.

We picked up a similar camera on Amazon for $98 on sale. Looks like there are many of the same camera under different brands (all from China, of course). I had to modify the "Furrion compatible" mounting plate that was supplied. It didn't completely cover the notch on the Furrion base so I would have let water in. I wound up cutting off the tab on the top of the supplied mounting plate and then screwing the modified plate on top of the Furrion cover so I'd have a water tight seal. I had to drill a hole in the original cover to pass the wire through (cut and resoldered the wire) I'm happy with the results and like seeing what's behind me on the road.
Thanks for passing along the tip though.

Totally agree with your observation of the quality of the Murphy bed mattress in the 17 MKE.

Hello, just checking in, we have a brand new Imagine 25 BHE and have used it a couple of times. The mattress on the Murphy bed is horrible, and seeing if you are still happy with your decision on the Sleepys 8" mattress because I want to go out this weekend and buy one. Thanks in advance!

We go south for the winter. The mattress in our new MKE17 lasted almost 1 month. By the time we got home it had a 3” dip on my side. I weigh 130 lbs.
