Vent covers

We are thinking of getting covers for the vents on our RV roof. Then we can leave the vents open during the rain.
Any disadvantages to doing this?

I just (yesterday) installed 3 maxxair II vent covers on our reflection 27bh. I did it mainly to be able to leave the vents open a bit on these hot summer days while it is not in use without having to worry about it if it rains. Other than being a little un-sightly having them on the roof, I don't see any downfall. Also , on our first outing, we noticed the sun was really bright in the morning coming through the vent in the roof. I installed black vent covers in hopes of keeping the bedroom darker longer in the mornings.

We had Maxxair on our previous trailer, lasted about 4 years before they turned brittle and cracked, maybe due to sun aging. We immediately installed white vent covers on our new trailer with maxxair fans which are pretty quiet. We went with white which allows extra light to illuminate the back of the trailer. Also, white might reduce heat absorption in the summer. I can't report any disadvantages to having roof vents.

I have covers on my 3 vents and see no disadvantage to them at all

Highly recommend the new MaxxAir vents and covers

I have them on both vents. It's great as you can leave them open as you travel too.
Only dissadvantage was a dust storm we had while it was in storage with the vents open. We got a nice fine coat of dust in the trailer. It was a fluke and nothing a couple of swiffers couldn't handle.

Safe travels!

We have vent covers on ours. It has been very warm here, upper 80’s to low 90’s and very humid, so I had all the vents open. This evening we received almost 2 1/2” of rain in about an hour. After the rain I went and checked the camper and not a drop inside. As far as I am concerned, the vent covers are a worthwhile investment.

I have them on all three of my vents and like them. The only problem I have had was only two of the vents have the auto close if rain hits them. Had a storm where the rain was blowing sideways, and the rain went into the vent. Two closed closed like they were supposed to, one that didn't have the system I had some water to clean up.

I’ve put vent hoods on the 4 RVs we have owned. It is an easy DIY project. The hardest part is carrying the hood up the ladder.

I love having them as it means we can vent the RV without using the AC, even when it is raining. As others mentioned, rain can still get in if the wind is blowing horizontally from the rear. But that has seldom happened to us in 12 years of RVing.

I had vent covers on my past motorhomes that was stored at my home. My travel trailer is stored in a storage facility. I have been debating getting them to let some of the heat escape. But would it let in dust and possible heat with the vents open into the trailer.

But a bigger issue is the installation. I installed the previous one's myself, but that was years ago. Plus my solar panel is right beside the ladder and I have not been brave enough yet to get up there.

One one minor disadvantage: they can restrict airflow slightly on a powered fan. BUT the advantages far outway the dis. One big advantage is a covet protects the lid from sun damage. Its a heck of a lot harder replacing a lid than a cover.

Weve had the black MaxxAir Fanmate covers on our vents for 3yrs and other than a little fade, have held up well and done a great job venting. Have found our vent hood covers are great for extra heat reduction, keeping rain from entering thru an open vent lid, and sun damage to vent lids.

The only caution I am (or would be) concerned about, is leaving vent lids (under the hoods) open during long periods of storage. Squirels, mice, chipmunks, birds, etc could chew their way thru the plastic grills and vent screens to enter into the RV. We had one of our AC cover vent openings chewed thru..... is why I would be cautious about leaving them open during long term storage. Same reason why we dont leave the stove exhaust vent open either when in storage. ;)

We had the covers on our rig and they worked well. It is nice to be able to drive down the road with the lids open and no worries. They did add a few inches of height to our fifth wheel. Just enough that it would not fit under the carport so off came the covers.

I just installed Maxxair covers on the vents in my 200MK and was a little surprised at how much they restrict the vent cover from opening. I checked and double checked the position before making the drill holes for the brackets and could not find a position that allowed them to open more than about 1/3 the way. Is this normal?

I love the MaxxAir covers I have on my vents for just that reason. We can open them or leave them open providing that the rain, snow or dirt isn't blowing from the open side.

I was able to get mine 2/3+ open. Not sure why you're not able to get wider. Try it and see if ir makes a perceivable difference. It may be acceptable at that opening

Sorry to say but the white covers will get brittle and crack quicker than the black covers. It has something to do with the UV inhibitors used in the black plastic.

It depends on which Maxx Air covers you have. The Maxx Air II coves will allow the vents to open 75% or more. Also there shouldn't be any need to drill holes to install the covers... most all of the roof vents and fans have prepunched holes with plugs in them that you remove and will give you the correct location.

One of the first things we did when we took delivery of our 2021 GD Momentum 31G was install vent covers on all five of our vents. We used the white ones as that allows more light. The only slight downside might be if it's very windy on rainy days, some rain might get in but not really that much and only if it's very windy and the wind is blow in the right direction.
