We love cooking over the campfire in our dutch oven! Two favorites are chili and speghetti. Nothing fancy, but oh so good when the smoky essence is included in the flavor profile!

What do you love to cook, over the campfire, in foil, pie irons, crockpot....etc....

I use any recipe that will work in slow cooker or regular oven. Breads and cakes are easy, roasts and stews are good. I don't have any special recipes. We bought a campfire cookbook years ago, I think someone borrowed it

Like LC mentioned, anything cooked in an oven can be cooked outdoors in a Dutch oven. I use ours for cooking everything from biscuits and breakfast casseroles to chili and lasagna. Cobblers and dump cakes are very easy and are great outdoors. There are tons of recipes online. I use this table as a rough guide for temperature settings.

We use the crockpot to cook baked potatoes at the campground. At home, we use the crockpot for soups and cooking beef roasts, but we don't eat that heavy when camping.

We grill our meats almost every meal, and seldom even cook inside. We do use an electric skillet all the time outside to cook hash browns with onions.

Other than the always favorite "grillin" brats, burgers, and chicken breasts, when we have time and more family/friends camping we love to smoke a turkey or ribs or do beercan chicken. Here's a picture of our smoked turkey last July.....yum yum yum yum !

That turkey looks great!
Dutch ovens, have 2 also. Cornish game hens with corn on the cob, potatoes, carrots and anything else you want to put in. Cobbler for dessert, biscuits for breakfast. Foil meals are also a good. Found this picture and thought I'd add it.

Add one more to the DO user list. I have 3. A 13,10 and 8. Love to make stews, brisket, stuffed cornish hens ,cornbread, cinnamon rolls and cakes and what ever else we are in the mood for.
I cheat on the brisket and smoke it at home, slice it before it gets to tender. Then cook it in the DO with a bath of vernors, BBQ sauce, onions & mushrooms . If I'm in an adventurous mood it gets flipped upside down and make pizza. My 13 has little feet on the lid too.

Also like to cook over the fire on a tripod and my jumbo joe. Beer butt chicken is great off the grill. We use the crock pot more in the fall or early spring for soups or pork roast with apples and onions...

Now that you guy succeed in making me hungry maybe I'll go find a snack

Marcy & Gary--think we know who wins the award for best RVing food ! I'll have Carol fire up her Margaritavile machine and make "foofoo" drinks for you all/us while we await the feast !

LOL, Gary wishes I cooked like that all the time when we camp. Each year I seem to get a little lazier with my cooking.
The big DO doesn't go unless we camp with a group any more.

I'll pass on the foo foo drink, but a good red wine would do.

Dan and Carol, I think Margaritas qualify as camp cooking. And I have to say I make a mighty fine one as well;) I don't have a dutch oven yet, maybe this year. Favorites here are the standards, good ribs a great steak (red wine included of course) and some awesome fajitas to go with those frosty margaritas. I think I like this group:D

I knew there was a reason we just had to get that new fiver! Me tinks the rally is gonna be fun! Might just have to bring a bottle or two of our homemade Zinfadel to share! We can toast to new friends!

For homemade Zinfandel I'll be your friend! Especially if its white!!! :)

So this is a recipe I found on food.com slightly modified that makes an awesome burger (our go to food on any outdoor trip).

Before departure mix together in a large bowl:

1 egg
1 teaspoon mustard (regular or Dijon)
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 small onion, finely grated
1 clove garlic, minced
1⁄2 teaspoon salt
1⁄2 teaspoon pepper
1 lb medium ground beef

Then stir in:
1 tablespoon of mayo

Optionally add:
1 tablespoon chopped sun-dried tomato
or
1 fresh jalapenos, chopped

Form into patties (size of your choosing) and store in the fridge in a leak proof container.

Time to eat just pull out the patties and throw em' on the grill.
Cook to your liking (rare, medium, etc......)

Profit!

That sounds great! I'd even consider subing the jalapenos/tomatoes with blue cheese chunks.

My husband makes a similar recipe but uses guacamole instead of mayo...

My wife and I too like where this thread is going and the burger sounds amazing droidguru......will need to try it out. Bruce & Terry--Red Zin is one of Carol's favorites ! For those active on this thread and the “Trip to Napa valley” thread, and you are going to visit the Napa Valley wine country, bringing back some vino to share with your fellow GD Forum owners will be MOST appreciated indeed !

Carol and I took in the south of Frisco wine country area (we did Monterey Bay to Paso Robles areas) a few years ago on our drive down highway 1 from Frisco and the drive was spectacular. We wanted to stop at the J. Lohr winery in Paso Robles as Jerry Lohr is from South Dakota. They were wonderful and gracious hosts and we also got to spend some time with Jerry’s son Steve. Next time, we will need to go north to Napa/Sonoma/others.

We have a serious problem though. When enjoying our wine sitting in our rich Corinthian leather (thank you, Ricardo Montalbán) theater seats watching our favorite Blu-rays of Don Clark and the Fenech brothers counting the cash……..where are we to put the wine glass when you don’t want to hold it ? I understand the Solitudes come with a “wine butler” attendant to hold your wine glass but we Reflection (and possible Momentum as well) owners have to move and find a suitable place to set down our glass. We may have to trade up.

Dan
