I was thinking about starting this thread just the other day!!!! Currently I haven't hauled anything but the contents of my old fifth wheel in my garage, but i plan to haul a 2006 Harley Davidson Electra Glide Ultra Classic and a Honda Shadow Aero in my garage. I did scale my set up this weekend on the way home and the weights are as follows...Front Axle: 4,600lbs, Rear Axle: 7,940lbs, Trailer Axles: 13,440lbs, Total GCW:25,980lbs. That was with a 1/2 tank of fuel in the truck, full fresh water, 1/2 tank of gas in the generator tank, and all of my stuff except the motorcycles...should work out about perfect.

Shamu, is that an EZGO TXT? Mine are the EZGO RXV models, that are around 48 inches wide, I did have a TXT and it would not fit 2, (the TXT with the RXV). Now looking into it, Yamaha has a model and the Club Car Precedent are narrow enough to go side by side also, I just like the RXV's, 48 volt AC, 22.5 mph, and batteries last all weekend, as long as I'm not always in the pedal!! I really enjoy the parking brake of the RXV's, there is no way that they will move unless the switch is in tow mode, and the key is on, so the kids can play on them and they won't roll around.

Mine is a Yamaha G-16
I acquired a TXT this winter, some assembly required.
It is a true basket case (more like basket's)
Next winter I have a guy that wants to paint both carts and air brush the Momentum badge on them

I went over the scales today, full of fuel, 2 dogs and the wife, 1/4 tank fuel in fuel station, just got back from camping so it was still loaded (besides a little food) and the 2 golf carts in the garage. Front axle:4280, rear axle: 7540, trailer axles: 15740, total: 27560. You sure know it is back there!! I think an automatic is in my future.

Mike,
I notice you have a 2005 Dodge Dually and a GCW of 25,980lbs. I am not throwing darts but looking for knowledge. Isn't your GCW over your allowable GCWR?
I have a 2007 Dodge Dually, 6.7L, Auto 6-speed, 3.73 axle ratio and the towing guides list mine at GCWR of 21,000lbs. I am looking to replace my 2011 Raptor Toyhauler and would luv to get a GD 380 or 385 but when I look at the weights, especially the dry weight, they exceed my 21,000 GCWR. Maybe you have a 4.1 axle ratio that gets you 23,000lbs. Again, I am just looking for education on this so I can make an infomed decision. Anything you can help with on this is appreciative.
Tk you,
Sam Gallagher

Sam,

You are correct, as my truck was built with 3.73's, I am over the GCW...however I have changed the ring and pinion to 4.56's, added air bags as well, and have an exhaust brake for slowing it down. Those weights were without the two motorcycles, which will add about another 1,500 pounds to put me somewhere around 27,500 (I plan on scaling again this weekend). My truck tows fine and more importantly stops fine, and I am 100% confident going up and down the road (former over the road driver). The two big differences between our trucks is you have the 6.7, I have the 5.9, you have the automatic, I have the 6 speed manual (NV5600). The only other issue, is the legality should there be an accident. I am aware of any ramifications of MY actions, nothing is unsafe, axles, tires, suspension, and frame are all rated for the load they are being subjected to. The number is the number, and as manufactured it is 21,000, as it sits, your guess is as good as mine, but In my very eperienced opinion, my set up is good. YMMV

Mike,
Tks for your reply. When you say you changed the ring and pinion to 4.56 I assume you changed your rear axle from 3.73 to 4.56, which is giving you more torque...towing capacity.
I got a quote from our locar Dodge Dealer to change my rear axle from 3.73 to 4.1 and came in at $2,737. This would increase my towing by 2,000lbs. Cheaper than a new truck but does not seem like a wothwhile trade off.
I added airbags mainly to assist with the conditions of our highways and not because the dually is sagging.
Do you know when you change your axle does anything else mechanically on the truck need to be upgraded?
I am not sure what to do. Most of the new 5th wheel toyhaulers are heavier than what I should be pulling.
Sam

Sam,

With the automatic you have, I am not sure what the final drive ratio would be to go with anything above 4.10. However, that price of $2,737 seems way high to me. A transmission shop should be able to do it for way cheaper. My swap was $1,200.00 (2WD), admittedly that is an exremely good price parts were $900 (my cousin works at the shop). No further changes were required on my truck with the upgrade to 4.56. Would I do it with your truck + 4.10's yes. I would add an exhaust brake, a transmission temperature gauge, run it. I scaled my truck again this weekend, with my bukes in it, to make sure that I am not overloading any axles, and in fact the weight on the truck improved with the motorcycles in the trailer. Front Axle: 4,220lbs; Rear Axle: 7,640lbs; Trailer Axles: 15,380lbs; Gross: 27,240. I am comfortable with this set up.

Mike

Mike,
If I could change my axle ratio for $1,200 I would do it.
I am going to shop with local shops who can handle changing the rear axle for pricing so I can make a decision.
I do have an exhaust brake and air bags.
I just have to determine if the cost of changing the axle to get to GCVR OF 23,000 is worth it. Since I only have
57,000 miles on my 2007 I am inclined to make it work within the best technicals I can do.
Best Regards,
Sam

Just ordered a Momentum 380TH. We'll be hauling our 2012 Honda Goldwing in it. We retire the end of July and will be ready to hit the road!

TV is a 2014 F350 6.7L 4x4 DRW with 3.73, so I think I have plenty of truck.

Mike,
Checked with reputable local shop and was quoted $1,450 to change the axle. I am leaning towards doing it.

I towed my 385Th once with my 2006 cummins manual dually. I promptly bought a 2011 Silverado Duramax and have not looked back, went from a 15600 tow cap to a 21000 and it shows in the brakes, the suspension, and the power. I had air bags on the Dodge, and I put them on the Chevy also, the ride is so much better when you get those overload springs off their brackets. I need to weigh my new setup, as you can see my weights in a few post back with the Dodge, and it seems like the more I use the camper, the more stuff I remove If I don't need it I get rid of it, saves space and weight!!

We haul monkey cages, bristers side by side, 12x12 tent.

Found another car that would fit in the 355/385TH, questionable with the 380TH, other than the Smartcar and that's the Scion IQ. It has more space since it's a bit longer.

Here are the basics:
  • Exterior Length 120.1" exterior length
  • Exterior Width 66.1" exterior body width
  • Exterior Height 59.1" exterior height
  • Curb Weight 2,127 lbs.
  • Gross Vehicle Weight 2,800 lbs
As you can see it may not work with the 380TH since the Garage it's only 122" which does not leave a lot of wiggle room before you hit the sliding glass doors and the patio rails when folded. If only the 380 would have been 42' 9", the same as the 385TH, and not 42' 2" there would have been plenty of room. That was one of the reasons I put together my hybrid of the 385/380TH was hopping that GD would come up with something to get more garage length and keep what I think is the better layout of the 380TH when you don't need the half bath.

As long as the IQ is empty when you load and tow it should be fine for the Garage which I believe is rated at 2,500 lbs and the ramp 3,000 lbs. Personally I'd use a couple of loading ramps to take the weight off the door just because. Still you loose 300 lbs over the Smartcar which puts you at only about 1,750 of cargo. With the 380TH you would get back about 200 lbs but I'd be worried about breaking the sliding glass doors if the IQ just wiggled wrong during transit or while loading.

Sure wish the Momentum had the same hold downs as the Fuzion and Raptor but I understand Keystone RV has a patent on the welded hold downs:(

For us since nothing is going to happen till after the 1st of the year we should be able to get a 2012 or 2013 coming off lease that has low miles. Without paying the "Drive off the Lot" charge for a new one.
